Some of these games have been released by Mercer or the opponent and some other schools have released their full schedules.
From those, we can determine...
1 other OOC game; most likely at home; unknown opponent
4 SoCon Teams that have also not released their schedules - Furman, Chattanooga, VMI, Western Carolina
1 Bye/Open Week
9/2 - ? - Possible: Bye, OOC (FUBeAR GUESS is Jacksonville U.), Chatt*
9/9 - Wofford*
9/16 - @ Auburn
9/23 - @ East Tennessee State*
9/30 - ? - Possible: Bye, OOC, Chatt*, VMI*, @ WCU*

So...IF there is a game on the week of 9/2, the game, most likely will be at Home...which would mean 2 Home Games to open the season...and they could be against 2 SoCon FCS Playoff Teams...and then Auburn. That's kind of a tough schedule to open the season...so, I'm thinking 9/2 will be an OOC Home Game with Chatt falling in 1 of the other 3 weeks where they are 'Possible'...and I'm thinking Mercer will do everything they can to A) make 9/2 a home game AND B) have that game (hopefully, a win) 'count' toward playoff consideration, ie, an FCS Team...but I don't think that APSU returns a game to Macon this year. I think I read that was in 2019 (or something like that)....so, I'm thinking a PFL Team (Stetson, Jacksonville, Campbell (transitioning to Big South), Davidson, or Morehead State) would be a great 'fit' in there. Perhaps, it will be a Big South or OVC Team though.

No other common open dates for these 2 Teams to meet * Also, the game on 10/14 is ALMOST certainly vs. Chattanooga in Macon. Chatt opens the week before 9/2 vs. JaxSt and if they didn't take a bye on 9/2, they would have 2 open dates/byes in the middle of the season. Possible, but doesn't happen often. * So, IF Chatt is 10/14, that most likely means that Mercer's other OOC game, in addition to Auburn & Alabama, will be 9/2 and the bye week will be 10/28. It would be highly unusual for a Team to 'take' a Bye in the 1st FULL week of Season (9/2), and let every other team get a 'head start' on them as they could not start practice until later, etc. * So...I've added an "Almost Certain" Schedule below... The 2013 "Blackout" game vs Jax was an epic (and crazy) battle. Both teams have changed quite a bit since those days.... Kerwin Bell & Son are no longer slinging the ball every play for the Dolphins. They have taken their talents to Valdosta State. Artis Gilmore's alma mater, much like our Bellhop 'friends' in Charleston, after parting ways with Bell (or vice-versa) went up to D2 Lenoir-Rhyne and brought in a Coaching Staff that runs the Triple Option. So, that should be a great help to Mercer's D as they will now, with the hiring of Clay Hendrix at Furman, most likely be facing 4 Teams that run the Triple Option in 2017 (JaxU, El Cid, Woffy, and FU). Oh - looks like I had the Open Date slotted in correctly as well. Bears get Halloween Weekend off this year... |
