I thought the Bears would contend for the SoCon title this year. If not this year, when?
Is Hoffman on the hot seat?

I don't think there is a hot seat at Mercer at this time.

Maybe a better question is, should Hoffman be on the hot seat?
I am all for the season to play out, but things have not gone well this year.
MU has not been competitive since joining the Southern. The team seems to always underperform. Is that coaching? Probably.
If Hoffman is not on the hot seat it is due to the Duke win. And I get it, no one wants to fire the guy who put that magical moment together.

Two thoughts.
1. The SoCon is a tougher slate top to bottom in most sports (maybe all) than the A-Sun was. I think Mercer has done respectably in most sports, and really well in some. The last year or two has been some of the toughest SoCon basketball I've seen in a long time. There are a number of really good teams.
2. If you've got a good coach, I wouldn't make any hasty decisions.

Jackal makes a good point; hasty decisions are dangerous. In college basketball, it is very risky to change a coach. Even blue blood programs like UNC, Kentucky, and Indiana have had trouble hiring a coach that will be successful.
Any time a lower mid major makes a hire, it is almost always from the assistant coach pool of applicants. And those guys are a complete unknown. Sure the upside is high, but they could also destroy a program. They have never run a program. Will they be able to attract good assistants? Can they recruit to their new school? Or does a lower mid major turn to a retread coach? That rarely works. But with risk there is a chance of greater reward too. Mercer is in a better place now than when Hoffman was hired due to being in a better conference, being a more known school, and Hoffman’s efforts to build the program which included the NCAA win.
So I am not in favor of firing Hoffman this year. He is a good coach. But if we are not competing for a SoCon championship by the sixth year, a change needs to be on the table.

Sam Mitchell was mentioned as a potential HC for UGa.
"Sam Mitchell, former NBA coach: Mitchell played and coached at the pro level, leading the Toronto Raptors from 2004-09 and briefly the Minnesota Timberwolves two seasons ago. He doesn’t have college coaching experience, but he’s from Georgia: He grew up in Columbus and played his college ball at Mercer."

Georgia HC search doesn't deserve its own thread. 😎

I would be very, very surprised if Football & M&W Hoops at WCU are not at max schollie level. Prolly their AD looking to fear-tactic, poor-mouth fund raise. Besides I happen to know of a school that won 4 SoCon Football Championships in a row with 55 Scholarships vs. 95 at most opponents...at a school that cost 2x - 4x more to attend than those opponents. Stop boo-hooing and figure out how to raise more money or do more with what you have or both...or drop down to D2 or NAIA...but pay ur $1mm SoCon exit fee on the way out the door. See ya, wouldn’t wanna be ya. PEACE!

I don't think a $1m exit fee would apply if a school elected to move down a classification. It would if FUBeAR was the SoCon Commissioner If a school isn't willing to commit to funding their programs to be competitive with the league, then the conference should encourage them to leave, not penalize them.

Speaking of funding, why did Mercer waste it's money on the CBI? No benefit from these pay-for-play post season tournaments.
