NIL will be critical. Does Mercer basketball have an NIL Collective?

MBB and WBB searches underway.
Coach Gardner will be a tough act to follow. CGG not so much.

today." hoopdirt.com/report-mercer-parts-ways-with-head-basketball-coach-greg-gary/"According to a Field of 68 report, Mercer has parted ways with men’s basketball coach Greg Gary. Gary had spent the past five seasons at Mercer, where he put together a 81-79 (.506) record. This past season, the Bears went 16-17 (8-10 SoCon). Prior to his time at Mercer, Gary spent eight seasons working as an assistant to Matt Painter at Purdue.

If he wants to move up in the coaching world, Navy is an odd move. NIL and the Portal will not be an issue with Navy. He will be perceived as lacking experience in these crucial areas for future jobs.

I would understand if he left for an FBS HC job or an OC at a P5 program, but Navy?

While the Bears have not played well, of the remaining games only Georgia is not winnable.
The remaining teams are not that good either.

The US News made significant changes to its methodology. Success of first gen college students and publication/citation of faculty have been included. Which kind of surprises me that Mercer didn't jump because of this.

It does appear that football is more important to Mercer administration and the fans. Mercer can be a FCS power, especially with many of the traditional FCS power schools moving to FBS. In general, NCAA basketball has changed for the worse. Mercer and other non P6 schools will be feeder programs. Those overlooked players who make a name for themselves at a SoCon school will enter the portal to move to a P6 program. As a fan of college basketball more so than football, this is sad to me, but there isn't a future in non-P6 basketball. But, yes, Gary has not performed up to expectations. Regardless of the changing landscape of college basketball, a SoCon championship every five years should be the expectation. The basketball Bears haven't been in that discussion under Gary.

Da Bears won a SoCon game! Nice win vs ETSU on the road. As I watched that, I thought, "Did ETSU make an even worse coaching hire?"
