SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Southern Conference’s Council of Presidents has approved a policy to permit member institutions to award cost of attendance stipends to student-athletes effective with the 2016-17 academic year.
“The Council was mindful of respecting institutional authority,” said Commissioner John Iamarino. “This is permissive legislation, not mandatory, and provides flexibility for institutions to choose which sports and which individuals they might want to consider, should they choose to award these stipends. Our members will continue to use NCAA-distributed dollars, primarily through the Student Assistance Fund, to address the ongoing needs of their student-athletes.”
So, the SoCon is going to allow the member schools decide if they will offer cost of attendance. I think Wofford and VMI has already said they will not.
I'm curious what Mercer is going to do.

I think I read where UTC is only going to give COA to Basketball but not Football.

Thats great news for the SOCON..... I sure hope MU does...... only way to build a program these day in football. If MU wants to be a power then they have to do the COA!

I think I read where UTC is only going to give COA to Basketball but not Football. That is the approach I would take at Mercer. Unless, the other SoCon schools decide to give COA to FB as well. I doubt many FCS teams will cover COA. Mercer can probably afford to pay the COA for 28 basketball players (13 men and 15 women).

Mercer can afford some type of COA for Football as well. Need to take the lead on this is the SOCON so show MU wants to be a leader in the league and they will attrack more recruits. It an ugly game but if you wanna win championships then you have to play.

are any other FCS schools paying COA? I don't know that it's actually started yet, but there are plenty in FCS that have indicated they will, yes.

Hope MU says they participate in COA sooner then later. Be active not reactive!

IF this is true, it would appear that VMI and Wofford have already said no to COA:
Every institution must make choices that reflect its values, priorities and circumstances. Our institutions have chosen not to offer additional cost of attendance payments to student-athletes at this time.We care deeply about our student-athletes, but we also care deeply about all of our students and want to treat all students equitably at a time when overall aid is limited, costs are increasing, and public financial support for higher education is diminishing. Signed by the leaders of:
James Madison Delaware William & Mary VMI Wofford Elon New Hampshire Hofstra Vermont

Something about a draft that was not supposed to be released when it was....said something like they don't disagree with what it says in that draft, but will always keep their options open and continually evaluate the situation....something like that. Maybe it was just VMI. Maybe it was just Woffy....I don't know...not really following that issue too closely. I think they left enough wiggle-room for their Coaches to say if the other schools in the SoCon do it, then we'll do it to recruits....y'know, "a 'feature,' of our program, not a 'bug.'"

Perfect time for MU to make a stand and show they want to lead and offer some COA....be in front of this process and lead the way. Make MU even more attractive. MU can take advantage of others saying that are not participating.
