I'm not convinced that we have the personnel to play press man against a team with big receivers like VMI. Also, playing press man is predicated on being able to generate pressure on the QB. Because if you play man and the QB has a ton of time, it's big play city.
As a friend said to me at the game Saturday in a similar conversation, "Do you want to die slow, or die fast?"
And, to Jackal's point, zone ain't pretty, but it gives you more chances to make something happen on D. As opposed to giving up a bunch of huge plays/TD's in the passing game.

It is excruciating to watch as a fan. But good quarterbacks and good receivers are going to find one another. The question is simply whether you give yourself a chance to make the tackle once they catch it.
