From what I can tell (mostly meaning what I've heard talking to FUBeAR) Furman's defense is legit. Their starting QB is out with a broken ankle, but their backup is pretty good. What are your thoughts on our first SoCon game?

The Vegas line for the game is Mercer +20.5. The Bears have been exceeding expectations since before day 1, gonna have to do it again on Sat.

I could see us keeping it inside 20 if we play well. It's going to be a challenge.

From what I saw of the furman game last week, Russ needs to wear his running shoes. Those ends they have are big and fast. I think passing game needs to be the quick game. Db's are playing bump coverage, but they're not good at it. Jt should be able to get off the line if he use he's hands well.

Hey guys. Great looking board. As a Furman AND Mercer alum (who also happens to be on vacation with ample free time to peruse message boards) I have been looking forward to this one for a while.
Furman's got a good defense. The group is deep, physical, and fast. There is youth in the defensive backfield that probably can be exploited. Strength of the defense, though, is in the front seven. They will run a rotation of eight or nine different defensive linemen out there, all of them quality. Not a lot worked for Gardner Webb against that group last week.
Offense is a bit more of a question mark. Lost starting QB for the year to an injury. Backup, Woodruff, is less of a polished passer, but has good speed and is far more apt to tuck it and run. Furman's running game was really a non-factor in week one. I imagine they will try and establish that part of the offense early.
Furman is one of those "old school" teams. Offense wants to establish the run, spread the ball around to a lot of different receivers, and occasionally throw a haymaker or two and see if they can land the knockout. Defense is fast, physical, tackles well, and has a penchant for turning turnovers into points. Coach Fowler rarely speeds up the pace, and is, in many respects, conservative.
Looking forward to a great game on Saturday. I expect a great crowd and a lot of folks in purple to make the trip. Lot of story lines in this one.

Looking forward to seeing a Mercer game and experiencing the atmosphere down there...Good people down there in Macon and at Mercer...Can't wait for the game down there...I saw the football complex when it was being constructed, but haven't seen it in person since it was built...Looking forward to it...Good thing it's at night, as it is about as hot in Macon this time of year as it is in Charleston!

John - come say hello - would love to meet you. I'll be tailgating with the Mercer Football Families Group outside the left field line of the softball field. BearWalk goes right by there at 3:30. You can get a close-up look at the short, small, skinny, slow, weak LittleBears then. ;-) - BDH

Thanks for stopping in Jackal and soconjohn. I was inspired to put this together after spending a little time over on the UFFP. I hope we can get to that level of participation. This weekend should be really exciting. Also, I'm tailgating behind the right field wall of the baseball stadium. Same thing. If you are walking around, please stop by. I'll be the 6'4'' guy with a beard in khakis and the orange Mercer University Under Armour shirt. Oh, and black New Balances with orange trim, with the word "Mercer" stitched on the back of the left shoe and "Bears" stitched on the back of the right
