Article is about Chatt. playing Bama.
Although FUBeAR was not properly cited as the source of the quote, you'll recognize the FUBeAR 'schtick.'
Have to advise that the quote was taken out of context though. FUBeAR was talking about WINNING these types of games; not about being excited just to play in them.
ARTICLE: How Chattanooga fans deal with the positives ($$) and negatives (injuries) of playing a powerhouse like Alabama
Here's the full post, with the quoted part bolded FWIW...
Well, I'm not a Chatt guy, but I did Play and Coach (as a Grad Asst) for another SoCon program...and I also did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.
Anyway, it's been more than a few years, but during my tenure (+1 year), we played South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Clemson, North Carolina, Florida, NC State, South Carolina (again), Georgia Tech, and then NC State twice more. We lost the 1st 6 of those games, but only the 1st South Carolina game was not very competitive. The final scores don't always show the competitiveness of the the game. For example, the Gators aired it out several times (successfully) to change the look of that close game.
But the best part of the story is that we won the last 4 I mentioned - 4 in a row over FBS Teams. That's, I believe, what NDSU has done now, or maybe they have won 5 in a row.
As a Player, I always found these games, typically, to be less hard-hitting than SoCon games. There just wasn't the 'hate' or 'familiarity' there that breeds the kind of hitting that I saw in SoCon games. Our opponents may have been a little bit taller, or a few pounds heavier, or a few twitches faster, but from an individual matchup perspective, it really wasn't much different. Their best guys were about the same as the best in the SoCon.
The BIG difference WAS and IS DEPTH. When we played UNC on a day when the Temp on the Field was 112, I was our starting Center. They rolled 5 different NG's in there and I didn't notice much of a drop-off from #1 to #5. Meanwhile, my backup weighed 210 pounds and had never dressed for a Varsity game. Speed kills, but DEPTH buries and that's what happens in many of these games. You will see the FCS Teams competitive for a half or maybe 3 quarters, but Football is a PUNISHING game and by the time the 4th quarter rolls around the FCS Starters are spent and the FBS 5-Deep is still fresh.
Despite all that, I know that I, my Teammates, and our Coaches went into each of those games EXPECTING to WIN...not hoping, not thinking, not believing...but EXPECTING to WIN. That goes a LONG way. I know that our opponents 1st scoffed when it became apparent to them in the 1st series that we EXPECTED to win, but by the 3rd or 4th series, that scoffing changed to surprise and then a little bit of that famous line from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid..."Who are these guys?" And, then we knew...we had 'em. I can't describe how wonderful the "BOO's" from their Home Fans sounded to me during those games....better than any Cheers I ever heard, honestly.
Other posters have commented thoroughly about the money and the recruiting, etc. Everything they have said is spot on; so I can't add to that.
By the way...while I don't think I'll bet on the Mocs vs. Alabama, I wouldn't be one bit surprised to see Samford beat Mississippi State on Saturday and to see The Citadel take down the UNC Tar Heels in the final week of the regular season.
