I pretty much agree with your scores. I think UVA's D is solid at times, but not this week with Tech's O. I think Ga Tech wins 35-31. Alabama could score 80, but Saban has too much class. 50 sounds right. Chatty would have to score late against the subs. A win for Mercer would be huge. Despite everything, finishing with a winning record is a plus. Some rough moments this year. With the Big Four of the SoCon doing so well, it seemed like MU couldn't play a complete game against them and the staff missed on some adjustments. Ya'll know more than me, but this is what I saw at least.... Since getting stationed at Robins, I've grown to pull for Mercer and watch them on the ESPN app when Alabama or Jax State isn't playing. I'm going to my first Mercer game Saturday. I was surprised that Furman beat Wofford last month. Their D is bad, but they can score. Wofford is a damn good running team and Furman held on. I'm new to the board, but will try to post when I get time. Anyways, hoping for a win to finish the season off on a positive note.

The Admin of this Board, BearDownMU, visits every couple of weeks or so (to pick up the checks, I guess)...usually, if he's not busy. Just a comment about the "Projected Scores." Those aren't my projections. Those are the scores I calculate from LiveLines/5 Dimes spreads & Over/Under numbers for these games. My projections (and results) may differ....and I'm sure NOT making book on these games. I don't think that's legal here in Guam, where I live (Got that NSA? G-U-A-M, Guam). Excited that you are coming to your 1st Mercer game this Saturday! It should be an excellent football game played by 2 very good teams that just didn't quite put things together as they would have liked this year. IMO, there's not a whit of difference (that's my Grandmother's phrase; not sure what it means exactly) in overall talent level among the Top 6 Teams in the SoCon. Depth, injuries, execution of chosen 'systems,' Coaching decisions, and 'breaks' account for the differences in their results, much more than Talent levels. Regardless of the game itself, Mercer is a GREAT place to come see a game. Great campus/tailgating/stadium, etc....and very much hassle-free. You'll have a GREAT time. Bring several hundred of your friends!!

A little off topic here, but how the heck is KSU ranked in the Coaches poll??? Yes they are 8-2, but let's take a deeper dive on that record. First, one of those losses is to ETSU, the second worst team in our conference. Next they have played an NAIA(not a good one either), and two mediocre Division 2s. So their record is more like 5-2. Then 3 of those wins are against the bottom feeders of their own conference with losing records and losses to SoCon teams. So their marquee wins are Furman and Duquesne. We get a win against Furman and I think you gotta have us top 25(sarcasm).

I think it's two seasons in FBS before ranking/bowl birth or conference title opportunities. But it could only be one in FCS. Just depends of your league and scheduling. Mercer took a different route...I agree their schedule hasn't been all that, but they are a fun bunch. On a neutral field, I think Mercer would win a close one however. Mercer's schedule has forged them a bit more...

Furman lost to Wofford two weeks ago. Could argue that the coulda won or shoulda won, but cannot argue that they did win. My bad. You are correct. For some reason I thought they pulled it out. Not sure why... Because they allowed Wofford to score twice before the half and threw the game sealing touchdown into the arms of a Wofford defender in the endzone.

Mercer, I think, has to keep Furman from establishing a running game. The Paladin offense goes from decent to dangerous when the running game is working.

Mercer, I think, has to keep Furman from establishing a running game. The Paladin offense goes from decent to dangerous when the running game is working. That should be a fun match-up to watch. IMO, Mercer's run defense has been excellent this season (last season also, but better this year). Let's look at some stats... El Cid - Rushed 52 times for 262 yards (5.04 ypa), but if we remove a single 70 yard run on the 2nd play of the game, that changes to 192 yards / 3.76 ypa. El Cid averages 360 ypg rushing at a 5.5 ypa clip. GT - Jackets went for 354 yards in 52 attempt (6.8 ypa). Not too good, but it was Mercer's 1st FBS game ever, so I'll give them a pass. Also, GT averages 5.5 ypa, against FBS competition; so another reason for a 'pass.' TTU - 34 yards on 18 attempts (1.9 ypa). Nope the Golden Eagles don't run it too well, but they are averaging 3.2 ypa for the season, so the Bears held them well below that average VMI - 29 yards on 39 attempts (0.7 ypa). Can't do much better than that. Granted, the Keydets are not known for running the ball, but they are averaging 3.1 ypa, so Mercer held them to less than 1/2 their average. Chatt - 273 yards on 46 attempts (5.9 ypa). But, Mercer just did not play the 1st half of that game for some reason. Chatt only gained 112 yards rushing in the 2nd half (with their starters in the game until the last series) on 24 attempts for a 4.7 ypa average. Their average ypa is 5.2...so I'll give Mercer a 1/2 'pass' on this game. WCU - 99 yards on 32 attempts (3.1 ypa). The Catamounts average 4.4 ypa. APSU - 186 yards of 46 attempts (4.0 ypa). The Govs average 4.2 ypa, so, despite Mercer playing some puzzling personnel combinations on Defense the entire game and APSU making the decision to burn the redshirt of their highly-acclaimed FR 'Athlete' QB, the Bears held the Govs to less than their average Woffy - 205 yards on 60 attempts (3.4 ypa). The Terriers average 5.0 ypa. ETSU - 105 yards on 34 attempts (3.1 ypa). The Bucs average 3.6 ypa Sammy - 54 yards on 15 attempts (3.6 ypa). The Bulldogs aveage 3.6 ypa. So, with the exceptions of GT and Chatt, Mercer has held their other 8 opponents to less than their average YPA (allright Sammy was equal, but that's splitting hairs, isn't it?). If we 'recognize' the 'game and half passes' I've given them for those games, then they've run the table on holding teams below their average. The Bears Rushing D performances against El Cid and Woffy were absolutely exceptional. I will be surprised if FU is able to much exceed the Paladins season average of 4.3 ypa, but I'm sure that average has been much better in the 2nd half of the season. So, that will, as I said, be a FUN match-up to watch tomorrow.
