The Twitterverse seems to think that Furman will name Clay Hendrix (from Air Force and carrying a lot of purple blood in his veins; also a college teammate of Bobby Lamb) as their new head coach.

As predicted... Tom Arth Named 23rd Head Coach of Mocs FootballNote the first person quoted in the "What they are saying about Tom Arth" section of this article. Many are saying that this is, essentially, a Peyton Manning hire...which is not a bad thing, IMO. Manning lives in the Chattanooga area. I believe his wife is from there. He has been involved, to some degree, with the Mocs program while Coach Huesman was there. The Mocs AD, David Blackburn was formerly involved with the UTenn-Knoxville Football Program during Manning's years there (1994-1997) in several roles, eventually becoming an Associate AD before leaving in 2013 to take the AD role in Chatt. Apparently, he is 'in line' to take the AD spot in Knoxville upon the retirement of the current AD, Dave Hart, on 6/30/17. That hire is expected to be made/announced in Feb. of 2017. Not, necessarily a 'sure thing,' but peeps think that's the way it's going to 'go down.' So...looking toward the future, I could imagine that Blackburn takes the AD role, Arth does well in Chatt for 2-3 years (if all goes to plan), and then makes the move to Knoxville if Butch Jones can 'hang on' for that long, but does not stumble too badly during the interim. If he does (continue to) stumble and the Vols decide to make a change before 2019, I could see them having a VERY hard time finding a Coach, who has done his (or her, I guess, it is the 2010's after all) homework on the grand scheme of things and sees Coach Arth, possibly the hand-picked (by the guy whose name is on the street leading to Neyland Stadium ( Peyton Manning Pass )) successor waiting in the wings. In addition to being the 'owner' of the street leading to the stadium, Mr. Manning also has stepped up and ensured that his voice will DEFINITELY be heard in such matters in Knoxville - MANNING ANNOUNCES LEADERSHIP COMMITMENT - Peyton Manning Announces $3 Million Leadership Commitment To TennesseeInteresting stuff, huh? Any Mocs (or even Vols) Fans reading this, please feel free to correct any factual errors I have made here. I'm certainly no expert in things Mocs/Vols-related.

In other news...the SoCon, IMO, just got a whole lot tougher today... Clay Hendrix Assumes Head Football Coaching Duties At FurmanCoach Hendrix was a 'pipsqueak' Freshman Scout Team OG in my final playing year at FU and was playing on FU's O-Line when I was the O-Line GA there in '83 and spring of '84. He also recruited a former All SoCon Bear O-Lineman that I know pretty well to sign with Air Force in 2011. I would imagine he also recruited such Bears as Tripp Patterson (whose Dad was a LB in the same FU class as Coach Hendrix), Alex Lakes, Tee Mitchell, Kyle Williams, Kyle Trammel, and Hank Avery to sign with Air Force. I just can't say enough good things about Coach Hendrix. He's a great Football Coach, and an even better Man. Gosh, I love SoCon Football!

I heard coach Doolittle left the program Not exactly 'official,' but Football Scoop is usually fairly accurate... The Scoop – Wednesday January 4, 2017 Presbyterian (FCS – SC): Per source, Mercer safeties coach / co-special teams coordinator Mitch Doolittle is joining the staff as defensive coordinator.

Interesting article about UTC and its future in the SoCon www.timesfreepress.com/news/sports/college/story/2017/may/07/football-attendance-decline-may-lead-utc-look/426797/"The administration could choose to stand pat. A budding rivalry with Mercer has started to develop in all sports, and with East Tennessee State back in the SoCon and now fielding a football team, there's still the chance that in a few years that rivalry will have been built back up after being absent for over a decade. Plus Samford is close enough that there are enough Bulldog alumni in the area. But for every ETSU and Mercer, there's a Wofford, Citadel or Furman that, while big games for the teams and the core fan base, just don't have the appeal to get the average fan in the stands. The best solution could be that it's time for UTC to leave, and while it would cost the Mocs some to go, one major question remains. How much is it costing them to stay?"

Anything is possible, but I think this is a Sportswriter looking to raise his own Profile. The only 'source' he cites in this article is the FORMER Football Coach, but he's on Twitter saying "some at the University think..." and such. I don't think UTC (without a MAJOR benefactor putting in a huge chunk - maybe P. Manning will do that) has the funding to pay the $1M SoCon Exit Fee nor the necessary funding to meet FBS Requirements. Not enough upside to jump to OVC and not enough money (I don't think) to jump to FBS. Heck, their practice field is a 50 yard long patch by a smelly creek and they don't even sponsor baseball and are 2 or 3 sports shy of the minimum required to move to FBS (16). They'd have to increase their attendance by about 40% also. IMO, the Mocs would be better served to focus on finding ways to get their student body to show up for the games and connecting with the people of Chattanooga to get them there. It's hard, but 'running away' to an even more uncertain future and/or throwing away 7 figures on an Exit Fee don't seem like good 'solutions' to me.

I think it would be pretty dumb for UTC to leave at this moment. Maybe it would work out for them in the future, but not now. We just put 4 teams in the FCS playoffs and the OVC was only able to get their champion in. Yes the teams would be closer, but to leave a conference after 40 years of history for a lesser conference doesn't make much sense.
I agree with FUBeAR that if they want to get asses in seats then they need to promote better. Chatt has a population of 176K in 143 sq. miles while Macon is 150K in 255sq. miles. UTC undergrad is 11K and Mercer(Macon) is around 3500. If they can't get people excited to go to games then they aren't creating the right atmosphere/not doing enough marketing.

I concur. UTC isn't going anywhere. And as ursus said, SoCon > OVC.
Maybe the SoCon should work on adding Belmont; basketball would improve and we would get into the Nashville market.
I would think Belmont would rather play against their peer institutions instead of a bunch of lowly public schools.

Their Men's soccer team is coming over in 2018. You like to read ol' Gene?

I would think Belmont would rather play against their peer institutions instead of a bunch of lowly public schools. Unless UNCG departs the SoCon, Belmont would have zero chance of moving to the SoCon. Those "lowly public schools" in the SoCon would block that move in an instant. As it stands right now, if you don't play football, you will not get into the SoCon.
