Tough draw for the men. ETSU is probably the biggest mismatch for the Bears. But, if they can get past the Bucs then I like our chances.
I like the women making it to the championship game.

Should be a good tournament. UTC's implosion has managed to cloud things a bit on the top bracket. Mercer avoids the Friday game, but gets arguably the best team in the conference in the opening round. I'm not sure there are many tournaments where the #3 seed is the quality of that ETSU team, and I suppose there are not that many where the #6 seed is as good as Mercer. As Furman may well face one or the other on Sunday, I'm hoping ETSU and Mercer play about 7 overtimes.

There are 48 'slots' selected on the All-SoCon Awards Men's Teams announced today - COY, POY, Players, Freshmen; both Media & Coaches' Votes.
Here's how that broke down...
#1 UNCG - 8 slots #2 Furman - 9 slots #3 ETSU - 3 slots #4 Chattanooga - 5 slots #5 Wofford - 6 slots #6 Mercer - 2 slots #7 Samford - 7 slots #8 WCU - 0 slots #9 El Cid - 6 slots #10 VMI - 2 slots
Something seems amiss here to me. Thoughts?

Thoughts? To me there is something more than just amiss here. The Citadel finished the season 4-14, tied for 8th place and gets 6 slots. Samford ends in 7th place with 7 slots, WCU get shut out (deservedly so), but even last place VMI get 2 slots. This is not right. Mercer got screwed as well.

This is analytics malpractice without context. VMI got two "slots" occupied by the same player, who also happened to be the conference's leading scorer. A guy, mind you, who didn't benefit from playing the worst team in the league twice (his own). He absolutely deserved recognition. All but one of the six of the Citadel's "slots" were the same player - Preston Parks. Parks was among the league leaders in just about everything. He also happens to be a freshman, which is where his name appears most often. Of the 48 "slots," 13 or so are reserved only for freshman (freshman of the year, all freshmen team). Teams that don't give significant minutes to freshmen (like Mercer), don't have freshmen on the all freshmen team. If you want to quibble as to whether a Mercer player deserved a a spot on the third team over a Samford player, then that's fine. I don't see any of this as a slight to Mercer, though.

Unique individuals honored on All-SoCon Men's Basketball Teams = 23 #1 UNCG - 4 - Alonso, Baldwin, White, Dickey #2 Furman - 4 - Sibley, Acox, Lyons, Medved #3 ETSU - 2 - Cromer, Bradford
#4 Chattanooga - 2 - Tuoyo, McLean #5 Wofford - 3 - Garcia, Magee, Hoover #6 Mercer - 1 - Holland#7 Samford - 4 - Denzel-Dyson, Walker, Sharkey, Chambers#8 WCU - 0 #9 El Cid - 2 - Parks, Harris#10 VMI - 1 - Peterson Less pronounced apparent 'amiss-iveness' when viewed this way, but still seems fairly amiss to me. Particularly, 8-10 SoCon record, Sammy, seems WAY over-represented! Also, ETSU (who finished in a 3-way tie for 1st (conference record-wise) with UNCG and FU and had a better overall record than both) and Mercer (who finished just 1 game behind Chatt & Woffy) seem a bit light in their relative post-season recognition. If ETSU had 1 more, Mercer 1 more, and Sammy 2 less, I would say..."That seems about right." Still could quibble about 1 more for Chatt, 1 less for El Cid, and even another less for Sammy to give WCU a 'rep' on there, but that might be over-quibbling. Thoughts?

The women easily handled Wofford. Samford up next.

Congratulations to the women in making it to the championship. Should be a good game against UTC.

The men came out strong against ETSU in the first half. ETSU turned up the intensity before halftime, but the Bears are still in the lead. Second half should be good.

ETSU players are a bunch of crybabies. Just play the game.

Getting sloppy and ETSU is making us pay for it.

The better team won. But the Bears played well. Hate that the season is over. Good luck to the seniors. But, man, we are going to be good next year.
