This is why MU football program is frustrating....wins like #17 Citadel on the road. This team is good...program is good.... yet at times, and key times to say the least they struggle to close it out, they seem to be set in a pattern to play to conservatively instead playing for the jugular. I Loved BL in the locker room telling his team how the 4th quarter issue was "slayed" this week. That goes to show you that it has been on everyone's mind. The "what if" is frustrating especially when they were winning games late. Wofford/ETSU two W's and Mercer is a ranked program. This program is so close to really being a force in the SOCON. I dont mean a win here and there....I mean a time to dominate the conference. Great location for recruiting, good facilities and fan base and premium academics. I said in a earlier thread that maybe a new direction was needed after all the 4th quarter issues....and can BL get them over the hump....? I love to see it.....Can MU go 4-0 or 3-1 to close out conference play with a 6-2 mark? Is this the year they take the step? If so then this program will take off. Go Bears!

You guys are entertaining.
One week, Mercer is doomed to mediocrity. The next week, they are ready to dominate the conference.

I think since it is a first year quarterback, it is the next step in whatever Mercer will become in the next few years. We could be at the beginning of a great run...or not.

You guys are entertaining. One week, Mercer is doomed to mediocrity. The next week, they are ready to dominate the conference. Actually not. When they lost another 4th quarter game I asked IS it time to start considering a change. After all how many late 4th quarter losses would the program except. It was a problem and based on what BL said in locker room after last win it was obviously a issue that was on everyone's mind. MU needs, imo still needs to go 5-3 in the SOCON and not lose a single late 4th quarter lead. The players are there, they proven they can compete with the best in the conference year after year, great job by this staff But time to take next steps is now...period.

But, haven't they been taking the next step every single year already? Does anyone feel like the program has had a "go backwards" year?
I personally don't. Your phrasing suggests they haven't taken steps and NOW is the time to do it.
I submit they have been doing it and continue to do it. It's a process.
Period. lol

3 straight conference W's is nice....showing that MU is at least now better program in only a few years then more them half the conference... taking the next step now will be to go 3-1 rest of season. Then you have made the next step and will be a force moving forward.

Guess after the FU loss the answers is no MU isn't prepared yet to take the next steps in the SOCON this year. Now hope MU can go 4-4 in SOCON.

I hope not. They should be looking to go 5-3

MU this year had the chance to win this Conference. Late losses to Wofford & FU and the no excuse loss to ETSU doomed them. MU could be undefeated in SOCON or worse case 5-1. The staff here still hasn't been able to coach in 4th quarters.

Overall | Conference | 6-5 | 4-4 | 6-5 | 5-3 | 5-6 | 3-5 | 6-5 | 5-3 |
Can you guess the Coach and team that finished with these records in the SoCon fairly recently?

The staff here still hasn't been able to coach in 4th quarters. I think you are making this too simple. Mercer had a good game plan against Furman. They played well. Furman played better. What exactly did you want the Mercer coaching staff to do better on Saturday? If Avery Ward had some how managed to catch that last throw instead of having it intercepted, would you feel differently? The SoCon is a tough conference. It has been a tough conference for a long time. Post season appearances and conference titles are really hard to come by.

OK - I googled Woffy...wasn’t them...but to your point...they were... 2013 - 5-6 & 4-4 2014 - 6-5 & 4-3 2015 - 6-5 & 4-3

I recall well that App State fans wanted Jerry Moore gone the season before he started a string of three straight national titles. They were 6-5 (4-3) in 2004.
The question is a little misleading because it doesn't say the seasons were consecutive. The most logical choice is Bobby Lamb, who I think is heading for his 8th or 9th season out of 13 in the SoCon at or within 1 game of .500.
