They were better at 4th downs, not committing drive killing penalties, and not having review.

They were better at 4th downs, not committing drive killing penalties, and not having review. What is your definition of "outplayed," then? Just me, but converting every fourth down, 50% of their third downs, scoring more, sacking the QB three times, completing 84% of passes, committing 7 fewer penalties, and not having special teams miscues suffices as a definition. Mercer did have more yards. So, there's that. If Mercer fans want to be bent up about a touchdown that they want to believe maybe wasn't though the referee 10 yards away immediately said it was as confirmed by the camera 200 yards away, then ok.

I watched Furman play Mercer a few weeks ago. It was a highly competitive and entertaining game. Let's not pretend, though, that Mercer somehow lost that game based on coaching mistakes or lack of preparation. The Paladins largely outplayed the Bears for most of the game, made plays down the stretch, and Mercer didn't. In fact, Furman (not Mercer) made the biggest mistake of the game by fumbling deep in their own zone. That fumble was likely the difference in Mercer hanging around late with a chance to tie it. Again, the margin for error is small. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.... lol One can only hear the meritless argument that Mercer should have beaten Furman so many times before order must be established. It was a good game. Both teams fought hard. Furman played better. They made more plays and didn't have as many errors.

By throwing a "largely" in there, you create a measure of degree that is inaccurate, in my opinion. Having read posts of yours for a few years now, I understand that the subtle introduction of modifiers to either 1) slightly tweak other people in the conversation or 2) somewhat passively aggressively overstate your opinion or understate the alternative, is one of the instruments in your tool box.
That being said, I've never said Mercer should have beaten Furman. Mercer should have beaten Wofford, but that's another story for another time. lol
I'm not going to get into throwing stats at one another and fight the urge to turn into youngterrier. But, regardless, I thought it was a pretty evenly matched game, and the Paladins won. "Largely outplayed" implies something else all together.

Motion to move Jackal and Chez23 to their own special thread where they can argue past each other in perpetuity.

Black hats, orange tops, black pants for the home finale.

Stats are instructive, but not terribly useful in most contexts. Besides, overstating my opinion or understating the alternative seems like another term for "argument." It's always just my opinion, and you are always free to disagree. I don't take offense. It was a really good football game two weeks ago. One of the better one's I've seen in some time.

They were better at 4th downs, not committing drive killing penalties, and not having review. as confirmed by the camera 200 yards away #FakeNews ...and we have already reviewed clear & compelling evidence of that particular SoCon Official’s ineptitude, particularly with regard to calling TD’s. Using his judgement to support your argument is akin to citing Hannibal Lechter as your go-to source for food reviews. So, there isn’t, nor has there been, anything definitive introduced regarding that particular TD. And once I learned who the Line Judge was, I would more seriously question whether or not Wilcox’s prior called TD was actually across the goal line. The ONLY bottom line is they were both CALLED TD’s by a SoCon Official in a SoCon Stadium which is not presently equipped with review, which is allowable under current SoCon rules. So, they are & were TD’s, which count & counted 6 points each. ANYTHING beyond that is pure conjecture & has yet to be clearly confirmed by any recorded video evidence. If Mercer fans want to say either or both of those TD’s were not called correctly, I have yet to see anything that clearly contradicts those claims. If Furman fans want to say either or both were called correctly, I have yet to see anything that clearly contradicts those claims. There is no definitive video supporting either side’s argument no matter how many times / ways those fans want to claim there is. This is very much like a 2007 GHSA Playoff game between the prior year’s Co-Champions, Roswell & Peachtree Ridge. 10 years later, Roswell fans can see that bad video clip & say the RB is clearly IN the end zone before he fumbled while scoring the game-winning TD in OT. PTR fans watch the same clip & can see the ball is clearly out. I’m a Roswell fan, but I have the gift/curse of visual objectivity AND I have watched THOUSANDS of hours of Football Video in the past 40 years. The ‘answer’ is “I think the ball may probably be out, but I can’t ACTUALLY see that it‘s clearly out after watching this clip over 100 times.” So...no decision; other than the Official’s...which was TD. I am a Mercer Fan AND I am a Furman Fan and I retain my gift/curse of visual objectivity in such matters. The answer, based on all videos available viewed multiple time at multiple speeds with various levels of enlargement, ... “Same, same.”

Despite the Game Notes published by Samford, the usually reliable TwitterVerse tells me that #6, WR Kelvin McKnight, will NOT be taking the field for the HomewoodHounds @ Mercer. What does that mean to their Offense? I guess we’ll find out, but this data may provide some guidance.

Defense is playing well considering lack of offense.

Well our offense outscored our offense 4-3. First game without a TD and coming out of a bye. Not sure what to say.

Feeling low for Mercer’s Seniors this AM. This group was the 1st group of scholarship Players recruited to Mercer & almost all of them came in & made an immediate impact. They brought the lagniappe that allowed a Team, primarily made up of hard-working, hard-nosed walk-ons, to be, surprisingly, extremely competitive in 6 of 7 SoCon games in 2014, perhaps more competitive than the Bears are now.
It is such a shame that their final home game at Mercer had to look like this. I know they & their families are/were so disappointed yesterday.
Finish STRONG SR. Bears! You all have so much to be proud of over the past 4 or 5 years. Show that PRIDE in your final 2 games!
I won’t say much about the game, but if I want to see that brand & quality of Football and/or that type of game, I’ll tune into a Wednesday night Sun Belt game.
I don’t.
