It will be interesting to see who Mercer will be able to get. Whoever it is, he will not be an obvious slam dunk hire. Those don't exist at this level. And please, no retreads. Those rarely work out. Hopefully it will be an assistant who is known as a good recruiter with strong leadership skills. One name that I like is Chris Caputo at Miami. Great recruiter who is ready to be an HC. hurricanesports.com/staff.aspx?staff=193

A knowledgeable Furman Fan suggested that the Bears should take a long look at this gentleman - JAY MCAULEY - Associate Head Men's Basketball Coach - Wofford CollegeFrom May-retta, played at Georgia, and certainly knows the SoCon with 4 years (2 2-year stints) at Wofford and 4 years at Furman. Also, would seem to understand recruiting to a private and challenging academic school. Furman and Wofford both have been ranked in the Top 25 this season, with Wofford sitting at #22 right now. Other than he currently works as a PorchYapper, I can't find anything not to like about his resume...if prior Head Coaching experience is not a requirement. BTW - Personally, I would rather have this kind of Assistant than a 'rising star' Assistant from an ACC/SEC School. IMO, what goes on with "Big Time" hoops - the ugliness of recruiting "1-and-dones" with money from shoe companies funneled to families and 'player runners' is not any kind of business that I would want 'my school' to be associated with...not at all.

LMU coach Josh Schartz has an impressive record at the DII level. lmurailsplitters.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1420&path=mbballIn his ten seasons on the sideline, Schertz has led the Railsplitters to a 266-55 record (82.9 percent), seven South Atlantic Conference regular-season titles and four South Atlantic Conference tournament championships. He has guided LMU to nine straight 20 win seasons, eight-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and 35 postseason victories. Under his leadership, the Railsplitters own the top three single-season marks in school and league history in both wins and winning percentage, and he's the only coach in league history to lead a team to the NCAA Division II Final Four multiple times including the 2016 National Championship Game.

Mitchell is the obvious choice but limited college coaching experience. Ridder sounds like a winner but not a lot of experience at this level. McAuley has good SoCon experience but no HC experience.

Not sure head coaching experience matters much.
Two of the best young coaches in the league - Wes Miller and Bob Richey - were never head coaches before their current gigs.

Elon just fired it's coach. Got this info from their board. Is Mercer willing to pay to get a coach?
1.) Northeastern: $630k in 2016 2.) Drexel- salary for Zach Spiker is unclear but Flint was paid $581k in his final season 3.) College of Charleston: 561k in 2018 4.) Hofstra: $454k in 2016 but signed an extension in 2018 so probably worth a little more 5.) Towson: $443k in 2016 6.) Delaware: unclear. Despite being a public institution, it’s not required to release salary data. Estimates put it at around $375k. 7.) Elon: $302k in 2016 7.) UNCW: $300k in 2018 with a buttload of incentives 9.) James Madison: $260k in 2016 10.) W&M 224,000 in 2014

Which is a better coaching job? Mercer, Elon or W&M
Before this season I would have said that the CAA is a better conference, but the CAA no longer has George Mason, VCU or ODU so it isn't the CAA of old.
W&M - an original D1 basketball school - has never been to the tournament. Without looking it up, I don't think Elon has any post season history either. Assuming similar salary offers, Mercer should be able to attract the better coach.

Names I see (on Twitter) associated with Mercer's search for a new Head Basketball Coach... Reco Dawson - HC @ Central Georgia Tech (JUCO in Macon - 24-8 this season - Won GCAA Championship & lost in 1st round of NJCCA Tournament) Korey McKray - Asst @ Mississippi State - Former Mercer Player & Team Captain (1997-2001) & Asst Coach (2008) from Decatur, GA - Also an Asst @ UCLA & LSU Philip Pearson - Current Asst @ Mercer - Played & Coached @ Alabama. Former Assoc HC @ Georgia. Also Coached @ Murray State & Arkansas - Little Rock Luke Murray - Asst @ Louisville - Son of Comedian/Actor, Bill Murray (That's the fact, Jack!) - Also Asst @ Xavier, Rhode Island, Towson, Wagner, and Arizona Bill Armstrong - Asst @ LSU - Player, Team Captain, & GA Coach @ UAB - Also Asst @ Chipola JC, Birmingham Southern, and Ole Miss Jamal Brunt - Asst @ VCU - Played & Asst Coach @ Randolph-Macon - Also Asst & Assoc HC @ Richmond & Asst @ Miami (FL) Winston Neal - HC @ Columbia State CC in Columbia, TN (26-7 won TCCAA Championship and lost in 2nd round of NJCCA Tournament - from Greenville, GA - Played and was Team Captain @ GT ('99-'02) - Asst @ Loyola Marymount, USC (CA) and Jacksonville U Charlton Young - Asst @ FSU - Star Player @ GaSou ('89-'93), HC @ GaSou ('09-'13 - 43–84(.339)/26–46(.361)) - Assoc HC @ Chatt ('04-'05) & Asst @ Auburn, Jacksonville U, Northeastern, and GT Ronnie Hamilton - Asst @ Ole Miss - Played Football @ Duke - Grad Asst @ UNC-Pembroke & Asst @ Tarleton State, The Citadel, Tulane, Houston, and MTSU Jonas Hayes - Asst @ Xavier - Atlanta native, who played @ WCU and Georgia - Asst @ Morehouse, SC State, Belmont Abbey, and Georgia Darryl LaBarrie - Not currently Coaching - placed on leave and later resigned from GT Asst role (2/18) due to alleged/suspected 'recruiting issues' - Just this week, the NCAA informed GT of alleged (I think that is the term used) Level 1 (the highest or worst) Violations associated with Mr. LaBarrie's (and, maybe, others') activities while on staff there. Don't think Mercer would pursue Mr. LaBarrie at this time, but he was mentioned in the TwitterVerse as a possible candidate, so he's 'on the list' (the rumor-only list). Mike Roberts - UNCG Assoc HC - Played @ Indiana and began Coaching as GA @ Texas Tech under Bobby Knight - Also Asst @ Cal & Rice FUBeAR's choice... ...was there ever any question? Who do you like? BTW - Seems Mercer is using this firm Fogler Consulting to assist with the Search. Too bad...FUBeAR WAS available and will work for Football Season Tickets / Sideline Passes. Guess they didn't know.

At least we would get Bill Murray at a few games a year. So, that alone makes his son attractive.

Of the two Mercer alums, Pearson or Mitchell? I could get on board with either of these two. Pearson might be the better recruiter but Mitchell has HC experience and at the highest level.
I still like Chris Caputo. He reportedly is GW's second choice if JT3 turns them down. If he is good enough for GW, he should be good enough for MU. He has been on the short list for a lot of good jobs.
