Often when a college hires a high school coach, there is a recruit in the mix too. Not sure that is the case with Coach Cardona but I have to think - pure speculation - that is very possible. A quick search didn't reveal any highly-rated players he is associated with.

Kim Lewis is an old friend and teammate of CGG who has been at a good (not great lately) Richmond program that is used to recruiting smart kids to a selective school. He should be a good fit at Mercer. It usually helps a new coach to be surround by people he trusts.

Not sure of the exact specifics, but I believe there is an NCAA rule preventing a Team from signing a Player that had a prior association with a member of that Team’s Staff for 2 years from the time they joined the Staff. So...maybe, look at the Soph’s from the school where he came from.

Bobby Kummer is supposed to be a good recruiter. Hopefully that is true.
The lack of experience of this coaching staff should not be an issue. All have been around.

Nope - just did some research - been around in hoops since 2010 & applied to football in 2016. grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/cmu/sports/acad-services/auto_pdf/2017-18/misc_non_event/IAWP_Legislation.pdf

According to VC, Haase was recruited by Purdue out of high school. Not sure if GG was the guy recruiting him then, but I am guessing so.

Hard to see Rivera as a walk-on with all of the accolades he’s received, but he seems to be freakishly ‘under-the-radar’ as far as any offers he’s received being public/published. I did see that he is a member of the National Honor Society though...and with Coach Cardona having been his HS Coach, it would, I believe, be a violation of NCAA rules for him to come to Mercer as a ‘recruited athlete’ this year and that’s something Mercer would just not do. So maybe he is a ‘walk-on’ with an academic scholarship. UPDATE NOTE: After further review, it seems that it’s OK with the NCAA to recruit former Players as long as the HS Coach is hired as an on-court Coach at the college (which Coach Cardona is), as opposed to a ‘support role,’ such as Director of Operations, etc. So...not sure what that means regarding Rivera. He still could be a ‘walk-on’ with an academic scholarship, which would explain the lack of announcement by Mercer & ‘save’ a scholarship for the Bears. Bottom line 1...who knows...just guessing, really. Bottom Line 2...it’s “ALL GOOD” for Mercer Basketball. Another thing I didn’t realize until tonight is how much those guys are ‘putting the band back together’ from their dominant 30-2 Miami Christian State Championship Team (FL 2A) in 2017! Miami Christian 2016-17 Basketball ScheduleCoach Cardona was the Head Coach, Haase was a Sr., Alvarez was a Jr., and Rivera was a So. on that Championship Team. Should Haase be Mercer Hoops-nicknamed “Joliet Jake;” Alvarez nicknamed “Elwood,” and Rivera be “Duck” (after Donald “Duck” Dunn) or “Guitar” (after Matt “Guitar” Murphy) or “Blue” (after “Blue” Lou Marini)?

Is this the final year for Coach Gary? Fansided has Gary listed as the 258th (out of 363 D1 coaches) best coach in the country.
258. Greg Gary (Mercer) (Last year: 261)
Overall record: 67-87
Year four at Mercer begins for Gary, with some decent results to this point with the Bears. A former point guard at Tulane, he coached at a number of schools, including stints at his alma mater and Miami under former coach Perry Clark. He had two unmemorable seasons leading Centenary when it was still D-1 and spent a long stretch on Matt Painter’s Purdue bench. He’s 51-43 as head coach at Mercer, winning 16 games this past season. Winning in the SoCon isn’t easy, as the Bears have been basically a middle-of-the-pack team these last three years.
