Furman went 6-2 in SoCon, 6-4 overall in 2018(?), they were co-champs with Wofford and someone else, and they were the only one of the three to not make the playoff. Their non-con losses were to Elon and Clemson, they had a game against Colgate cancelled due to a hurricane.
Charleston Southern has had their schedule (including hosting Mercer on 9/2) announced since mid-April, in the newspapers, etc, so I'm assuming all the paperwork was in place for that game to happen. We were supposed to host Charleston Southern this past season, but that didn't happen because the Big South cancelled their non-conference schedule due to COVID. Mercer was really late in announcing their schedule this year compared to a lot of schools, not sure why.

Perhaps Mercer will add an 11th game close to start of the season (we're already close). That's what happened with the Mercer-Presbyterian game a couple years ago; late add after PC's game with Stetson was cancelled due to weather (hurricane) and they needed a game. The playoff folks probably won't respect a ten game schedule (Mercer) when most others are playing 11 or 12.

Hello Bears - I'm new to this site and not exactly sure how the technology works. Anyway, Mercer should be absolutely proud of the outstanding win at Furman (Coach Cronic earned his stripes at Furman years ago with Coach Lamb, plus the Mercer guys went 5-3 in conference play during last spring's COVID inspired delayed season). Mercer looked great at home against Point this fall, and even Coach Saban complimented us on our 14 points in Alabama (against the defending national champion (UA) who's also the #1 team in the nation this year) (Bears scored more points than the 13 points FBS program Miami scored on UA the week previous). Our guys got close to the SoCon championship in the spring, VMI came from nowhere (credit to the cadets, good school, they deserve some success back in conference). Mercer Bears are here to play. Great Cudos to the new head coach, staff and players; University administration; athletic department and foundation (Jim Cole and Brian Gerrity and all their staff). Go Bears!

A short follow-up to my post a couple minutes ago. Coach Lamb is now the head coach at Andersonville University in South Carolina. They've never had football and he's starting it from scratch. He did basically the same at Mercer - re-starting the program, recruiting the staff and players, helping to plan and build the stadium, and all the rest. Thank you for your work at Mercer (especially that initial 10-2 season in the PFL and transition to the SoCon). All the Best!

Follow-up. My apologies for the misstep in my previous post - I'm not familiar with Anderson University and misstated its name as Andersonville University - certainly no harm or ill intended. I was simply mentioning Coach Lamb's new position and his contributions at Mercer. We live in highly political times, but not every misstatement is mean spirited and I regret other poster(s) apparently took it wrongly. It is responses such as those, however, that drive people away from civil affairs. Again, all the best to Coach Lamb in his current and future endeavors.
Good Luck to the Bears and to this site.

FUBeAR didn’t take your post wrongly in any way. FUBeAR was amused at the thought / mental picture of Coach Lamb starting up a Football Team at Andersonville prison (an infamously horrific CSA prison for Union POW’s) in 1864 that your innocent & understandable misstatement created in his highly dysfunctional ursine brain. As is often the case, FUBeAR decided to share the context of his amusement in a public forum. It seems the completely anachronistic absurdity of such a notion was insufficient to effectively convey FUBeAR’s amusement and may have, somehow, created an impression that it had political connotations. It didn’t. It doesn’t. If the intended humor failed to find readers’ funny-bones, that certainly is not the 1st time that has happened and, almost certainly, will not be the last. Thanks for posting here MULaw. Any thoughts on the home game vs. Samford this week?

I see what you did, and you really shouldn’t have. seems you were correct I thought it was still too soon after Andersonville, not that it might offend Mr. MULaw.

I thought it was still too soon after Andersonville, not that it might offend Mr. MULaw. LOL - Though a native of 1 of the 13, FUBeAR has only resided in Georgia for about 30 years (all those years above the gnat line), so pretty much a noobie to the Peach State, if Metro ATL is still accepted as being a part of Georgia. Shoulda realized that 1865 reference was, indeed, too soon.
