Mercer does a good job. I noted this on the Furman forum, but it wouldn't shock me if Mercer's budget for athletic marketing far exceeds most SoCon schools.

I agree. I do think Mercer has to play a little catchup. Some of the conference competition has been playing football continuously since the 1890s. Less work, perhaps, needed to introduce those schools to a larger audience.

Has anyone seen some analysis of the SoCon recruiting classes? Anybody know how the "experts" say Mercer did? All I can find is FBS stuff. Who cares about them???!!!

Southern pigskin used to a ranking for SoCon schools, but I think their writers had some close ties to Georgia Southern and dropped a lot of their SoCon coverage after the Eagles left for the FBS. It is interesting to talk about, but rankings are not worth the paper they are written on. Just from watching Furman, we have had some All Americans that were walk-ons and three star guys that never played a snap. Really have to wait three years and see what you have.

I just spent an hour trying to sort thru 247Sports Rankings for FCS / SoCon...totally pointless. 247 is a good recruiting site for FBS, but their SoCon Football stuff (and mostly likely all of FCS) is a Goat Rodeo inside a Dumpster Fire! So...Mercer Fans...don't fret over these claims that you see Chatt making about having the #1 class in FCS and SoCon...etc. 247 doesn't even have Mercer IN the SoCon in football and they have very few of the players of any SoCon (and probably FCS) teams' signing classes listed. As examples, Chandler Curtis nor Alex Lakes are listed in 247...and I think they did pretty well last year....no? Mercer filled their needs and got most of the players they wanted that could cut it academically at Mercer.

A Sammy fan, who I think posts here from time to time, came up with this ranking of SoCon Recruiting Classes. He had an explanation for how he derived these numbers, but once I got past the number of stars and he went into moon phases in the hometowns of each recruit on the day they gave their verbal commitment, I kind of glazed over. I am a bear of very little brain, after all.
SAMFORD - 329.1 - (Based on the Tweets I saw from the Samford Coaches leading up to signing day, I'm surprised this number is not 10x what he calculated) UTC - 248.6 MERCER - 177.2 THE CITADEL - 151.8 FURMAN - 151.7 WESTERN CAROLINA - 121.7
He didn't rank Woffy, VMI, or ETSU. Perhaps something about the high tides, atmospheric pressure, and the vernal equinox prohibited their inclusion.
Despite my joking, this ranking system is, IMHO, as good as whatever the Moc(k)s are using to claim their #1 Ranking in all of FCS...of maybe it was FBS AND the NFL Draft.
BTW - The Sammy's ABSOLUTELY HATED the Mercer billboards. "Illegal" "Cheesy" "Communist" "Depraved" "Downfall of Mankind" "Beginning of the EndTimes for College Athletics" were some of the phrases, I think, that they used to describe that absolutely GENIUS-LEVEL Marketing coup that was picked up and lauded by National Media.
Certainly entitled to their opinions though - heck, I really like Nickelback...different strokes, y'know.

I saw a current Samford player retweet a spoof of the Mercer billboards using a clearly deranged guy with teeth missing. Part of me thought it was funny, part of me thought it was in poor taste. But it must have really gotten under their skin.

I'm not sure how you could omit Alex Lakes from the 2014 difference makers. Perhaps the writer is not including R-Fr? Nice mentioned of the TEs though so I can't complain too much.
