Played 3 halves and won 2 of them. Starters mostly split and then our bench crushed their bench. Should be a good year but it will take all season for our team to fully come together just in time for the tournament and another trip back to the dance.

"Hopefully this opens the door for the two teams to schedule each other in the future. That was a great rivalry that got tarnished, but it's time to move on. None of the coaches or administrators are still around.
Mercer lost all five starters and two key backups to graduation. Bob Hoffman's a good coach, but that's tough to replace."
I read this on a GASU message board and was wondering if anybody knows what he is talking about. We were conference rivals when I was in school in the early 80s. I went to a Mercer/GASU game in Statesboro about 8-10 years ago, but don't know if they have played since. I thought the series effectively ended when Southern moved to the SoCon. Does anybody know how the series may have been "tarnished"?

Does anybody know how the series may have been "tarnished"? Yes, the Georgia Southern - Mercer games were some great games when both were in the TAAC. I can remember a few hotly contested games, two in particular ... the 87/88 win by Bill Bibb when we played the Eagles in the Coliseum, and the double OT win in 04/05 by Slonaker's crew. I really expected the series to get cancelled after that double OT win and I think the rumble that went down after that game soured Georgia Southern on the series, and IMO Slonaker really cooled on the idea of playing the Eagles, after losing the next three years before his ultimate departure. I remember this much about that double OT game, Duke played like the TE he became at Denver, and one of the Bear's assistant coaches was swinging away at a Eagle player at the final buzzer. The refs had zero control the entire game, and Porter was on the verge of a brawl that would have enveloped the fans. Only basketball game I've been to where the campus police had to get reinforcements. It would be a good series to renew for both schools, due to proximity and passionate fan bases. Would be better for both teams for schedule strength as well.

Wow that's interesting! Thanks for the info. For some reason I had never heard about the brawl that almost was. The current admin/athletic staff seem like the types that could get this series back on good terms.
