Just for 'the record' - you know me, I always want that 'record' to be accurate!....This TD was in the 2nd quarter and the score was 21-0 prior to the TD. Yes, it appeared that Mercer was clearly the better team, but Mercer recently came back from 21 down to within fingertips of tying a game against the SoCon Champions (who most SoCon fans, including you, would say is clearly the better team, right?)...so I'm not sure your characterization of "a team they are clubbing" is 100% 'fair' without the benefit of hindsight. Also, after scoring 2 more TD's in the 1st half, to make the score 42-0, I believe Mercer offered to play 10 minute quarters in the 2nd half instead of 15 minute quarters. And I believe Warner accepted that offer because they did shorten the 2nd half by 1/3rd. I've never seen that done before, but it does make more football-sense than a running clock mercy rule (as is used at other levels) because it allow both teams to play the 'normal' flow of the game, enabling them to 'get reps' AND accomplishes the same intent as the running clock. Mercer's starters did play the 1st series of the 2nd half and then 'checked out' for the rest of the day. I would think if Mercer's intent was to humiliate the opponent and/or to pad stats (which might have made some sense as they have 2 Finalists, Alex Lakes & Chandler Curtis, in the running for the Jerry Rice Award - Best FR in FCS), then they would not have offered the shortened game and would have left the starters in much longer. Also - As a former Offensive Lineman, I take personal offense at you calling the celebration "goofy!" I saw nothing but amazing young athletes demonstrating their agility, versatility, and grace. From the snap of the ball to the final flourish of the cartwheel, I felt as if I were watching the beauty of the Olympians of Ancient Greece! I'm not suggesting they were intending to humiliate anyone. I do not think you need any pre-planned celebrations regardless of opponent or score. There is a reason those things are penalized. A touchdown pass to an eligible tackle is a great call. From a football perspective, why run it against Warner? From a promotional perspective, I suppose you run it against the team you know won't be able to stop it (or even see it coming). I will say that cartwheel was top form. Almost Chris Farley-esque (though college kids have probably never heard of him).

Oh yeah- I remember seeing that on tv... not. So, Furman fans can only have fun if they are on tv? This year it's going to be tough for Furman fans to have at all...

A touchdown pass to an eligible tackle is a great call. From a football perspective, why run it against Warner? Great question and here's where having Coached the game comes in handy. I could cite several personal examples of doing this myself, but I'll just provide the current application instead. Guess what unique scoring play Woffy's D-Coaches saw on film in the Warner game video that they had to diagram, teach the Scout Team how to run, and actually run several reps of it in practice this week? Did you say "Throwback LATERAL to the Offensive Tackle?" (He was not "eligible" by alignment nor jersey number). Sure you did! Now, guess what Wofford's D-Coaches WEREN'T doing during the time it took to diagram the play, teach the Scout Team how to run it, and run several reps of it in practice this week? Did you say, "Working on stopping the rest of Mercer's offense?" I'm not sure if you did, but if you did, you would have heard the "DING, DING, DING" sound, cuz you would have been correct. Every second of practice matters and every second you can 'steal' from your opponents' practices gives you some advantage. Watch Woffy's offense - they have 164 ways to run the ball up the middle - different formations, different schemes, different line splits, etc., etc., etc. and Mercer's D has to work on all 164 of them this week. Most of the formations and motion you see in offenses these days is pure 'window dressing' just to keep D-Coord's from having any hair and give them ulcers. The play Mercer ran added a little fringe to the draperies. OK, I'm weak - 1 personal story - Coached a team 1 time where we ran Gun, 2-Back 95% of the time. The game before the playoffs against a very poor team, I put in 3 wishbone plays and ran them very effectively 1 or 2 times each. How much time do you think the other teams we met in the playoffs put into stopping our wishbone that we never ran again? I don't know either, but you should have seen the size of our Championship Trophy!

I don't know either, but you should have seen the size of our Championship Trophy! It certainly adds a wrinkle. If I am Wofford, though, I don't spend a lot of time of the Warner film. Not a lot a common opponent, and the game really wasn't close enough for Mercer to need to open up the playbook besides what they wanted Wofford to see. Of course, some plays that may work against Warner are not going to necessarily work against Wofford. Given their pass defense, though, Wofford may appreciate Mercer trying to throw it down field to a OT. I like the call (celebration aside). In my high school days in southwest Georgia we had a few "tackle over" formations where we would overload the line on one side and line a TE up next to the guard. Words cannot express how open that TE would be in the endzone.

Try again. Furman has won half the available SoCon titles this fall. Ya'll are a cross country school after all... You will have to help me understand what exactly is your point? If we are just talking about football, Furman has a national title, three national title appearances, 13 SoCon championships, 579 wins, and is top 10 in the NCAA in graduation success rates. I won't even mention the All Americans and Academic All Americans. That list could go on for pages. Plenty to cheer about if you ask me. Yes, we had a bad season. Still beat Mercer, though.
