The Mercer Bears will play the Auburn Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium in 2017!

I am surprised that top tier FBS teams still schedule FCS teams.

I am surprised that top tier FBS teams still schedule FCS teams. It is, IMO, a win win. FBS teams get a (usually) easy win, they put another 90k+ seats in the stands, and give their starters a bit of a break from the week in week out slog. The FCS teams can sell that game to their recruits who want a chance to play in an SEC environment and they get a pay day. The Big 10 has openly grumbled about these games (given a less than impressive record against FCS competition recently), but I've heard no such grumbling from the ACC/SEC.

I am surprised that top tier FBS teams still schedule FCS teams. If you look at SEC schedules, playing a SOCON team is a common theme. Looks like a win win relationship as schools our size can really benefit from a $1 mil payday; I hope this continues.

I haven't seen anything on the payout, but I would be stunned if it anywhere approached $1mm. Most SoCon/SEC matches are in the $400-500k range. A lot of that may depend on travel. Furman played LSU last season and get $500k. They played USC this year and received $250k. Obviously, its a heckuva lot cheaper to get the football team from Greenville to Columbia than to Baton Rouge.

I saw an MU Prof Tweeting with an Auburn Prof and they were discussing using the $600k to pay for some new Academic Center and the Mercers' Players medical bills (NARP morons). So...I'm gonna say that's the amount that Auburn is paying until I see something more reliable quoted. Per the AJC, Tech is paying $300k in 2016. In-state discount, I guess - kinda like the FU-Cocks game. Anyway - $1mm over those 2 years should pay a few bills in Macon...probably even some medical ones (from injuries sustained in the hard-hitting SoCon games and intra-squad scrimmages!)

Never thought about medical bills. Does anyone have an idea of what our medical bills are on average for the athletic department?

Don't know the answer to your question, but I do know the personal/family health insurance of the student athletes are 'hit' 1st and then the school picks up any out-of-pocket costs for examinations, tests, procedures, surgeries, specials braces, etc....so they probably aren't as high as one might imagine. Also, depends on how you define medical costs - do you include the cost of the Sports Med Dept. salaries...costs to pay Docs just to attend games, etc.? I'm sure there is some data somewhere available.
My point is/was that our FootballBears are no more likely to get hurt playing vs. SEC teams than they are SoCon or scrimmaging themselves. This is something that NARPS (Non-athletic regular people) like to say, but, in my experience, is not valid. In fact...in the ancient days when I played SoCon football, those games were A LOT more hard-hitting than the SEC & ACC games that we played. May be different today...but I don't think so.

I agree with you. Common perception is "I hope our boys don't get hurt," but in my viewing the players are just as likely (if not more) to get hurt in just a joe average game than against an SEC team. Just rolling back on memory, the only significant injury I can recall in a game against an SEC school was Furman's QB Chris Forcier breaking his shoulder against USC in 2010. I do recall Pittsburgh cheap shotting our players all over the field in 2004, which led to some injuries. That was more attributable to Pitt losing, I think, than any size difference.
