We were close last year, just a bad 1st half vs Sammy and 1 bad play vs PC. I do admire your optimism and your ability to expunge your memory of the last time Cantamount fans thought they were 'close.' Well I didn't reference the UTC game because we had our butts handed to us in that game. I referred to the PC and Sammy games, because we could have won those. Throw USF in that mix too. had we won two of those three, we very well could have had an at large bid. I didn't come on here to start anything, but maybe this year, your team can practice on winning more games instead of running trick plays on inferior opponents and rehearsing excessive celebrations.

Winning more games - You are saying that Mercer should aspire to emulate the amazing history of SoCon Football success that the Cantamounts have enjoyed in recent decades...right? Trick plays/Inferior opponent? - like throwing a double pass against an opponent with far fewer scholarship players....Does that qualify? Is that what you mean? Excessive Celebration - like when a horde of several hundred drunken hooligans (AKA WCU students) storms a SoCon opponent's home field after winning a regular-season game by 1 point and attempts to tear down the opponent's goal posts, including nearly killing a former All-SoCon Player of the opponent's by beating him in the head with a large stick? (Note: that WCU team, the team that inspired so much passion among their fans for a regular-season/mid-season game, went on to soar to a 2nd place finish in the SoCon and did not make the playoffs. As they used to say after such a non-feat on that beacon of culture, the TV Show Hee Haw,....HOO-RAY!!) - Is that the kind of excessive celebration you are talking about? Best to not make it so easy when you are 'not trying to start anything.'

Ok FUBeAR, keep reaching. I was trying to have a little friendly interaction in the off season. It looks like WCU may have gotten under your skin at some point. I was checking out this board to see what was going on, and there was a post about our schedule. I decided to add to the assessment of our schedule. Then, here you come and take the conversation in a different direction. so when I said I wasn't trying to start anything, I was being truthful. I made nothing easy, you are the one reaching for anything you can twist to be butt hurt about.
reach #1 - YOU saying we thought we were close, then posting a video of last years UTC game. I didn't bring up that game because we obviously weren't close.
reach #2 - YOU mocking our woes on the football field. No where did I say that Mercer should emulate anything that WCU is doing or has done.
reach #3 - YOU referenced your team as an inferior opponent, not me. WCU was trying to win a close conference game. There is a big difference between that and ooc, naia, 51-0 win over warner.
reach #4 - YOU bring up an ugly incident from the distant past. I'm not proud of, nor do I condone such an ugly display as fans assaulting a player or anyone. That was many administration/coaches/players/decades ago.
reach #5 - Should be you reaching to finish off that jar of shine you got when WCU rolled into town last year. Or maybe that is your problem, and why you are "Bearly Sane." We'll know not to give you any more when you journey up the mountain this coming October.
I'm sure most of the Mercer folks are good people, so I won't hold you up as a poor representation of them. To the rest of the Mercer faithful, again, good luck on your season. FUBeAR (AKA - Otis), say what you want, I'm done with you and this "conversation." good day

WCU may have gotten under your skin at some point You did have one accurate comment in your post. - Cheap & late shot by a WCU DLman cost me 7 games and my RT ACL in 1980 - I was standing next to the former Player, in 1984, who took the stick to the face/head, opening quite a gash, which required surgery. I should be completely honest though. I was not without 'sin.' Following WCUStick-boy's unprovoked & cowardly act, he became well-acquainted with my hands and the SoCon Championship rings I was wearing that day (just 2, I always felt wearing all 5 was just too gaudy). It may have been decades ago, but my knee still aches every day, particularly on cold days like this; and my former teammate still has the scar on his face that reminds me of that day every time I see him. Yep - no love for CantamountNation from me, ever. Sorry. If it helps, I always admired and respected Coach Waters. He was a fine man and an excellent Football Coach.

Well that sucks man! glad you got yours in on the punk before it was over. I hate to see things like that, in sports of all things. The sad thing is, those kind of people are everywhere.
I wasn't expecting any love, but now I understand a little more of the hostility. Good thing for WCU is I think coach Speir and coach Waters might be cut from the same cloth.

Mercer Releases 2015 Football Schedule 2015 Schedule on Mercer Football WebsiteMACON, Ga. – The Mercer University football program and head coach Bobby Lamb unveiled the 2015 schedule on Wednesday, an 11-game slate including six contests at Five Star Stadium. The Bears, who wrapped up spring practice on Wednesday morning, are fresh off their first season as a member of Southern Conference. Mercer finished the 2014 campaign with a 6-6 overall record, developing one of the league's top offenses and a defense that ranked among the FCS leaders in forced turnovers. "I am excited about the 2015 schedule and the challenge it brings to our program," said Lamb. "We look forward to hosting six games at Five Star Stadium this season and having the opportunity to play in front of our great fan base here in Middle Georgia." For the first time since reintroducing the program in 2013, the Bears kick-off a new season on the road. Mercer opens the 2015 campaign in Clarksville, Tenn. against Austin Peay on Labor Day weekend. The Bears' home opener is a week a later on Sept. 12, renewing an annual series with Stetson that dates back to the program's inaugural season as a member of the Pioneer Football League. A road contest at Tennessee Tech on Sept. 19 serves as the final tune-up for conference play, before the SoCon opener against Wofford on Oct. 3 at Five Star Stadium. After their first conference road test of the year at Western Carolina on Oct. 10, the Bears host back-to-back games at Five Star Stadium against ETSU (Oct. 17) and VMI (Oct. 24). Mercer will then make the trip to Charleston, S.C. for a Halloween match-up with The Citadel. November opens with a rematch of last season's shootout with Chattanooga, as the defending SoCon champions travel down I-75 for a Nov. 7 showdown. Mercer travels to Greenville, S.C. the following week, Nov. 14, as Lamb faces his alma mater at Paladin Stadium for the first time. The two teams squared off in front of a record-breaking crowd of 12,227 at Mercer a year ago in the Bears' inaugural Southern Conference game. Samford's first-year head Chris Hatcher returns to his hometown on Nov. 21 for the Bears' regular season finale at Five Star Stadium. Mercer will look to spoil the homecoming, having won its last three home finales dating back to the 1941 season. The Bears return all 11 starters on both offense and defense for the 2015 season, including FCS All-American Chandler Curtis and All-SoCon selections Alex Avant, Wilson Heres, Alex Lakes and Tyler Ward. 2015 ScheduleSep. 5 – at Austin Peay Sep. 12 – vs. Stetson Sep. 19 – at Tennessee Tech Oct. 3 – vs. Wofford Oct. 10 – at Western Carolina Oct. 17 – vs. ETSU Oct. 24 – vs. VMI Oct. 31 – at The Citadel Nov. 7 – vs. Chattanooga Nov. 14 – at Furman Nov. 21 – vs. Samford ...and there you have it folks. I think it's AWESOME!!

Good schedule. Outside of the ETSU game, should be a pretty challenging slate after Stetson. Off week comes at a good time right before Wofford.

Looks good ! ETSU will be a non-conference game this year, correct ? Correct...and, like Mercer was, the Bucs may be a lot better than expected coming out of the gate. The university has made a serious re-commitment to football. With the exception of being able to get an on-campus stadium built in time for the start-up, they have done everything 'on point' - brought in a 'name' D1 Head Coach - recruited like crazy - put a lot of money into ancillary football facilities (weight room, etc.) - heavy marketing to inspire the Alumni and local fanbase - took a practice year with game-like scrimmages...the other thing is they STARTED with athletic scholarships, which Mercer did not in their 1st 2 years of recruiting. In addition, I believe they might have a bit easier time getting players in school there than Mercer is able to. Kennesaw is the same story - plus they have an on campus stadium and are located in Metro ATL. Both of these programs could have very fast starts. Not so much singing the praises of those 2 new programs here as I am 'warning' BearsFans that they need to keep fervently supporting their Bears because new competitors for recruits, wins, and championships are entering the 'ring' every year.

The sheer number of new football programs is pretty astounding. The population has not altered significantly, nor the number of high school football players, but the number of programs has exploded at the FBS/FCS levels. The competition for recruits among schools that did not even field programs 10 or even 5 years ago has grown exponentially. Just in the deep south, if you add schools like Kennesaw, ETSU, Mercer, South Alabama, Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, etc. you are probably between 500-1000 additional scholarship spots on D1 football programs that did not exist 10-15 years ago. That is not even counting other programs like Presbyterian, Elon, App State, Georgia Southern that have moved classifications and increased their need for more scholarship players. Saturated market. ps. I realize ETSU was a D1 program, folded, and restarted.

Must be something big cause I'm not sure what they are waiting for to release the schedule. But I've been very impressed with the Mercer media efforts to date, so I will give them some slack here. Apparently they were waiting to announce the Five Star Stadium deal. Smart.

Apparently they were waiting to announce the Five Star Stadium deal. Smart. Disappointed there were no Drones involved with the announcement of Mercer's Football Schedule though. Hope the Bears' Media/Marketing guys aren't resting on their laurels.

Good schedule. Outside of the ETSU game, should be a pretty challenging slate after Stetson. Off week comes at a good time right before Wofford. I'll agree that Mercer should, by now, be able to out-athlete a Stetson team that made great strides last season in their 2nd year of the program. The Hatters improved from 2-10 to 5-7 with 3 wins in the PFL. The Hatters beat Campbell, who is almost as athletic as most SoCon teams and who led the Big South's Charleston Southern at halftime (CSU, BTW, beat The Citadel and lost to Vandy by only 1 point) APSU, despite their gosh-awful record the past 3 years is not 'terrible' either. They have a lot of young talent on their team and I know there were Pro Scouts at the game at Mercer last year looking at a couple of their DLmen. They seemed to find some confidence in the 2nd half of their game with Mercer last year by winning that half 15-14 and then winning the following week against an OVC team, Murray State. (Murray State, BTW, beat Southeast Missouri...who beat SE Louisiana (a 9-4 FCS playoff qualifying team) and Tennessee State, an FCS 1st round playoff game winner the prior year). All 11 regular season games will be challenging and all games will be played against legitimate NCAA Division 1 Teams. ...I'm sure the Mercer Coaches are quite pleased to have 2 weeks to prepare for Woffy and that they will have played a common opponent, Tennessee Tech, before that game...and that the Little Dogs play Gardner-Webb (who they lost to in 2014) the week before and at The Citadel the following week in what has become a heated rivalry of pride between SoCon T/O teams. The ankle-biters just might completely forget to prepare for that 'Bear Sandwich' between those 2 important games for their program. Ooooh - I just looked at the schedule - FU and Woffy both home on 9/26 (Mercer's off-week) vs. VMI and G-W respectively...FU's game is scheduled for 3 PM & Woffy played at night in the 2014 Season on that weekend in 2014. I just might take in a SoCon DoubleHeader Road Trip to the Upstate and 'scout' 3 future Mercer SoCon opponents. This schedule just keeps getting better!!!

I don't think any of those teams are absolute pushovers. Division 1 teams are Division 1 teams. They will all have athletes. I think that will be a challenge for Mercer this season. Obviously, they will be another year older and another year stronger. They do not have, as in their first two seasons, a lot of weak spots in the schedule or long home stands. They went from 8 home games, to 7, and now 6. That ups the difficulty. Does seem that if Furman rebounds (as I expect they will) those last four games could be character building. Road games to two notoriously unfriendly SoCon venues along with playing the two presumptive SoCon front runners at home.
