Phil Steele's All American Team OOPS - CORRECTION - These selections were made by Josh Buchanan, who formerly was a contributor to Phil Steele.
These are the TonySoftli.com All-America Teams. Link to Actual Source, instead of TTU's releaseChandler Curtis named FR Specialist of the Year, 2nd Team FR WR, and 3rd Team All-American Punt Returner (all classes, not just FR). Alex Lakes named 1st Team FR RB. Congrats to these YoungBears. Well-deserved by both. The timing of this is GREAT - 6 days before signing day. If there any 2015 offers out there that are wondering if Freshman can come in and make a HUGE SPLASH at Mercer, this kind of thing could definitely sway their decision. If Mercer is trying to 'flip' any Commits from other schools...I bet those prospects are going to hear from their Mercer Recruiter today!

BOTH OF THESES GUYS HAD A GREAT SEASON IN REGARDS TO LETTING FRESHMAN PLAY THEY REALLY DIDNT USE MR CURTIS THE WAY HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN USED ALEX DID GREAT FOR HOW MANY TIMES HE WAS HANDED THE BALL I DONT BELIEVE THAT THEY HANDED THERE PLAYMAKER ENOUGH AND WHO WANTS TO SIT ON THE SIDE LINE WHEN THEY KNOW THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY WITH THE REST OF THE GUYS. THE WAY THE COACHS MADE DECISSIONS WHEN IT CAME TO PLAY MAKING WASNT GREAT THIS YEAR NEEDS TO BE DIFFERENT CAUSE THE TEAM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE A GREAT SYSTEM WITH THE RIGHT PLAY CALLING AND THE RIGHT PLAY MAKERS ON THE FIELD TO MAKE IT HAPPEN . I TRULY DONT BELIEVE THAT THE GUYS PLAYED AS BAD AS THE RECORD SHOWS. PLAY CALLING AND PLAY THE PLAY MAKERS.AND I WISH THE BEARS A GREAT AND SUCCESSFUL YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Certainly not to take ANYTHING away from Mr. Lakes (who is my kind of RB!!!), but I'm not sure the statistics from 2014 support your conclusion on the Rushing side of things... NO.

He had almost 1/2 of the carries in 2014 and he gained the exact % of the total yards gained as the % of time he was given the ball. Taking out the Sacks on Mr. Russ (as I did for this analysis), it looks to me from these stats that the Coaches were pretty darn close to spot on in terms of the most efficient utilization of ball carriers. Perhaps, Mr. Usher could have rec'd a few more carries, but some of his yards in 2014 were gained in the latter stages of games, so that stat may be skewed a bit. Stats do not tell the whole story by any means, but I think the ball distribution, with the number of times the ball was rushed, was well-distributed. Now, if you want to 'argue' that they should have run the ball more, I could jump on your side there. In general, I'm just a big fan of RUN THE DANG BALL until they stop it!!! My guess is that you would not be a proponent of such a philosophy. The same statistical exercise can be done for Receptions and a case can be made from that exercise that Mr. Curtis should have been 'targeted' more, but that discounts that he was 'growing' into his role as a college WR during the 2014 season, he needed a BLOW after returning KO's and Punts, and the utilization of JT Palmer as a proven 'possession' receiver in 3rd & shorter yardage situations...among other non-statistical factors. Bottom line, IMO, the play-calling was pretty dang good in 2014 (and 2013). Of course, the Offense can get better and I'm sure they will. The D also will improve this year. We were a stop or 2 OR a fingertip or 2 AND an awful start + a called-back return for a TD vs. WCU away from winning our 1st 6 conference games. Change those things in the Bear's favor and the Wofford game wouldn't have mattered as we would have already clinched the SoCon Championship and a spot in the Playoffs. Even mentioning that as a realistic possibility is AMAZING considering the clear preseason consensus was the Mercer would get DESTROYED in every SoCon game in 2014 with the possible exception of the VMI game. Though, unfortunately, the Conf. record does not reflect it, the Bears did just fine in their SoCon debut of 2014. Looking forward to more exciting games and more success in 2015!
