Preseason All Conference Team www.collegesportsmadness.com/article/11974Phillip Leonard made the Second Team Chattanooga has the player of the year and freshman player of the year. They also have two First Team players. Good thing Wade left, he was building a beast in Rock City. And Kahlia Lawrence is Second Team for the women.

Chattanooga has the best FB, MBB & WBB in the SoCon. I am impressed.

Davidson is a private school and it dominated the SoCon in basketball before moving on to a multi-bid league. Davidson is what Mercer MBB needs to strive for. Besides, public or private, all schools are one coaching hire away from being George Mason under Jim Larranaga or one coaching hire away from being George Mason under Paul Hewitt. Do we have the right coach at MBB? I think so. Did UTC make a good hire in replacing Wade? Only time will tell.

I agree, but a lot of that is helped by rich tradition, which we are trying to build.
The reality of state universities, plainly, is that the kids they get don't have to meet the academic requirements a Mercer recruit does. I worked in Mercer Admissions with athletes. I saw kids go other places who would have been stars but just flat out couldn't get in to school based on Mercer's minimum standard.

I saw kids go other places who would have been stars but just flat out couldn't get in to school based on Mercer's minimum standard. That sort of ignores the facts the UTC was awful in football for years. Like 2 wins lose by 20 every week awful. Only recently have they found a new coach and filled the "big state school" power vacuum left by App and GSU. This is an extremely new phenomenon. Like, last two or three years. It is difficult for anyone in SoCon to replicate Davidson. Davidson doesn't focus on football. They focus everything on basketball. There are not many top 25 D1 basketball programs and top FCS football programs for a reason. It is really difficult to pull off (Villanova may be the only one). UTC has always generally been good in men's basketball and better in women's. They have not historically been dominant like Davidson was at times. UTC, notably, also does not field a baseball team. You cannot be good at everything.

It's different with basketball because of the size of teams. More players creates some dilution, in my estimation, where the academic requirements are the same but are less visible. Granted, the teams still have to recruit and get the players, but a superstar basketball players can make a big difference. Not so much with 1 football players. And if he has a 2.5 and an 800 on the SAT, he ain't coming to Mercer, and I suspect Furman either. But he could sure go to a state school.

SoCon #16 in RPII know it is early and in the end, the SoCon will be a one bid conference, but if the conference can stay in the teens then it will be a good year. And something to build on.

MU's current RPI is #38 with a projected #RPI of #131. RPI Forecast projects our record will be 20-9. Only Chatty is projected to finish ahead of the Bears in the SoCon.
