So...I heard a reporter say today that Mercer has some incredibly wonderful, experienced, talented, fantastic, world-beating 'skill' Players...which they do...so I was glad to hear him say that. Then, he said that Mercer will not compete for the SoCon Championship because their O-Line is not good enough or big enough. Pretty much fightin' words for me ...that I've listened to for 3 years now...from the media and other message board mavens. So, here's Response #1 - Not good enough? - They've proven for 2 years that they can block for the run and protect the QB...and put up great numbers in terms of yards, scoring, etc. What else are they supposed to do? Parachute in at halftime, playing a "God Bless America" and "Georgia" mash-up on gazoos...and then clean up the stadium afterward. I won't quote a bunch of stats. They've kicked butts in 8 states and everyone who knows football, has watched it, and isn't tryna tell some other story, knows it. Response #2 - Not good enough? (Oh yeah - I forgot to say, 'they' always say...."Well, they're going to be recruiting better players in the OL in the future, so once those players get in here, they'll be better." Excuse me peeps....See Response #1 FIRST, then realize that 4 of the 5 Projected OL starters for Mercer this Fall either PLAYED or HAD OFFERS TO PLAY D1 FBS Football. They'll have a bunch of 2 Stars..maybe a 3 Star starting on the OL this Fall...it doesn't really get much better than that in FCS ball, folks. So, yes I imagine they will get some TALLER OL Players into Mercer in the future, so peeps (whoever those peeps are) will THINK they are good OLmen, but I'm not so sure they will be getting, necessarily, BETTER OL Players than they have right now. Response #3 - Too Small? Really? - well, why don't we look at the ACTUAL numbers, HT/WT of Projected SoCon OL Starters, instead of perpetuating an erroneous perception... Team - HT - WT - COMMENTChatt 6-4 299 - Yep - gettin' an injured player back helps - I think their numbers are a bit padded to be honest, but they are bigger than Mercer - Ranked #5 in FCS Samford 6-4 294 - Yep - nice transfer in - I think their numbers are right - OK - they're a little bigger - Ranked as high as #12, I think, in FCS VMI 6-3 291 - Bigger doesn't always mean better and/or more wins, I would say. Wofford 6-3 291 - If 1" and 6 LB's matters to you, you never played football...and I think they might fudge their numbers a bit also Mercer 6-2 285 - Nice - wish they were a little taller, but they are athletic and SMART - By Goodness, we have & will find a way to win with this OL!!!Furman 6-3 282 - OK - a little taller, but skinnier - I KNOW at least one of their starters is fudging his height :-) WCU 6-3 280 - Wait - aren't they a favorite in the conference? Aren't they ranked in the Top 20? How can this be when they are SMALLER than Mercer? Citadel 6-1 274 - Shorter/Lighter and led the country in running the ball last year. So....does it REALLY MATTER? AVG 6-3 287 - This is your AVG SoCon OLman - They are about 1" shorter and 10 lbs lighter than FBS/NFL Linemen. Many FBS & NFL Teams would be better if they didn't use this as the 1st criteria for acquiring/evaluating OLmen.So...there, I've said my piece. I am still available to fight though, in case anyone wants to throw some hands with me 'bout the Bears OL (not really...I'm too old to fight in real life, but I am known in some parts as "The Message Board Mauler" )

I suppose they haven't posted the official 2015 weigh in stats from Wednesday. I know of one TE who played at 218lbs last year who weighed in at 229lbs. But it wouldn't surprise me a bit to see the OL stats go up.

Good post but MU will need to get bigger on the OL to win a SOCON Championship.. battle in the trenches on both side of the ball over a long season wins titles MU will NOT need to get bigger on the OL to win a SOCON Championship. MU will NOT need to get better on the OL to win a SOCON Championship. THAT was the ENTIRE POINT OF MY ("Good") POST!!!! They are BIG ENOUGH RIGHT NOW and they are GOOD ENOUGH RIGHT NOW on the OL to win a SOCON Championship! Chattanooga went undefeated in the SoCon last year and their OL Starters averaged 6-3 293. That is 1" taller and 8 lbs. heavier than the projected starters for Mercer's OL in 2015, using 2014 roster heights/weights. As 38 noted about a TE, I suspect Mercer's projected OL Starters will average 6-2 290, so that's 1" and 3 lbs, which is about 1% different...that difference is not nearly as significant as 67,000 other things that will impact whether Mercer wins a SoCon Championship in 2015 or not. If someone wants to say, "OL Size is 67,001th factor which will impact Mercer's SoCon Championship chances this Fall," I can go along with that. But, let's start with #1 1) Execution 2) Health 3) Depth Development 4) Opponent's Execution or lack of 5) Opponent's Health ...I'll stop, but I could get to 67,000 before I got to OL size...really I could. For example, 66,999 is whether or not any player's eyelids get jammed, and 67,000 is availability of a live rooster (when needed)

You make great points and I hope you are right about OL. My only point is over a long season OL/DL wear down and when conference play heats up you need the bigger bodies in there to execute late in the 4th quarter. All you have to do is look at FBS program that win all the time and the size and depth they carry on thier roster. I know different levels but still the focsu a lot is size and speed. Not sure MU has the depth yet (getting there) on either side of the ball. Again, I sure hope they do and with new recruits in this year lets hope some are ready to play! Go Bears!
