I haven't seen anything definitive. Based on articles and such, it seems like Marquise Irvin, WR and Stephen Houzah, CB will play right away. Anyone heard anything about others?

Makes sense as (knock all kinds of wood!) Abernathy has never had a bad snap on punts or XP's in 2 years and is a dang good cover guy - DESTROYED a PR @ Campbell in '13. Thinking Nixon might travel as a back-up/emergency snapper, but I'm sure #38 can handle those duties when he's not too busy catching TD's.

It is one of those jobs where no one notices you unless you screw up and hard to execute after an incomplete fly route. Although, he does love hunting down the PR....

Yep - despite actually being recruited as a Long Snapper by UNC (until I snapped one out of the back of our endzone from the 26 yard line over our 6-5 punter's (he was also a high jumper) head with my Recruiting Coach in the stands (he left shortly thereafter (in the 1st quarter)), I was a back-up / emergency Long Snapper n college. I always did just poorly enough in practice to make sure NOT to take the 'real' Long Snappers job and it wasn't because I was a nice guy....I just didn't see any 'extra pay' coming my way by doing it and that was before the NFL had dedicated Long Snappers...We're ALL very glad to have had #66 the past 2 years and (KNOCKING WOOD AGAIN) are looking forward to another PERFECT year from him in 2015!

Longsnapping was part of my high school duties. Not many, I think, can say they snapped a 52 yard field goal in a high school game (at least not in South Georgia). The best was to utilize those skills at summer camps. Hanging out with the kickers instead of hitting with the linemen was always a favorite past time. Those guys take 45 minutes just to stretch.

I watched a 59 yarder Chris Gardocki kicked at Redan High when I was in middle school. At the time, it was the longest field goal in Ga High School history.

Don't know the record is. 59 yard kick in a high school game is something else. Our kicker went on to play at Georgia Tech. He attempted a 63 yarder our junior year in the rain that witnesses at the goal post said fell a few feet short. Kid had some kind of leg.

Chris went on to Clemson and then punted in the NFL forever. Incidentally, Kevin Butler also went to Redan and at one point he was place kicking and Gardocki was punting for the Chicago Bears. Not sure if there has ever been a pair of kickers from the same high school on an NFL team.
The current Ga High School kicking record is 67 yards. Kicked by Rusty Curry from Duluth High School in 1999. That is a bomb. One slightly interesting note. Duluth had just fair caught a punt and the exercised their option for a free kick. So, it was like a kick off, no rush, but if it goes through, it's 3 points. Here's the video.

The longest "traditional" kick in GA history was Dax Langley's 63 yarder for Heritage High School in 1993.

Do you know who gets possession (since it's kicked on 1st down) and where the ball is spotted. One of our HS players, now in the NFL used to regularly kick off and put the ball thru the uprights - it was his goal to do that on every KO. In fact, we did not have 1 KO returned his Sr. Year - all were into or out of the end zone. Just thinking we might have been smart to try a few of these anytime we were forcing the opponent to punt from deep in their territory. Take the easy 3 (for him) and start 'em deep in their territory and play some tough D. They might even start going for it on 4th down in their own territory to avoid the quick 3 points. Something to ponder on should we ever have another kicker with his leg.

If this is attempted and missed, the other teams gets the ball at the spot of the kick. Also, it can be returned if caught in play. I'm not sure, but I think that's right.
