Got to see what Va Tech looks like tonight before going with that many points. Last time Furman played in Blacksburg (7 or 8 years ago) VT led 3-0 at the half and I think won 24-7. Not that it has anything to do with this year.

Week 1 is in the books, here are the Week 2 SoCon games with lines. Saturday, September 121:00pm Mars Hill at Chattanooga (-37) 1:30pm Morehead State at VMI (-22.5) 3:00pm Florida A&M at Samford (-29.5) 3:30pm Furman at Virginia Tech (-35) 6:00pm Western Carolina at Citadel (-3) 7:00pm Tennessee Tech at Wofford (-11) If you are interested, Mercer is a 22 point favorite over Stetson. All home teams are favored this week and there are some big lines. Happy picking! Tough with all this big spreads, but here's my shot. It's a home team sweep. Saturday, September 12 1:00pm Mars Hill at Chattanooga (-37) - They can't be happy about the JSU loss and I'm sure the Mocs will be itching to take it out on someone 1:30pm Morehead State at VMI (-22.5) - VMI's QB is legit and they put up serious numbers against an FBS team. Should keep it going against the Pioneer League Eagles. Keydets win and cover. 3:00pm Florida A&M at Samford (-29.5) - I'm not sure what will be more offensive: The final score or the Rattlers hideous orange and green unis. Bulldogs cover. 3:30pm Furman at Virginia Tech (-35) - VaTech is hanging with the #1 team in the nation as I type this. Furman is better, but did give up nearly 500 yards of offense to Coastal Carolina. Can't imagine this ends well, even with Jackal's history lesson. The Hokies cover. 6:00pm Western Carolina at The Citadel (-3) - Game of the week. It's early in the season and hard to tell so far. ElCid will be tough at home and seeing the option for the first time this season is never easy. Bullpups win and cover. 7:00pm Tennessee Tech at Wofford (-11) Again, who knows? Hard to say much about Woffy's offense after watching them play Clemson. I'll go conference homer and assume they work it out and cover the spread at home. And side note, I'm not a betting man, but if I was, I'd bet my house, car, and wife the Bears cover the 22.

I'll ruminate on my picks vs. the spread for a while, but I do know that I am picking all home teams to win this week (exception - reserving the right to change my WCU @ El Cid pick until after I watch some of the pair of Mountain Kitties fight over a yarn ball this past Sat. - UPDATE: Watched the 1st quarter of MHU@WCU - I'll stay with all Homers this Sat.)
But...for fun....I found a formula on AGS for calculating Power Rankings based on Wins, Scores, Yards Gained/Yards Allowed and level of competition played...so here are the SoCon Power Rankings after Week 1 (if I understood the formula correctly and did my math right)
PowerRank Team Total
1 Mercer 105 2 Samford 95 3 VMI 90 4 Chattanooga 87.5 5 Furman 75 6 Wofford 70 7 The Citadel 62.5 8 WCU 45
Something tells me our friends from Sammy, FU, and WCU, who occasionally post here might want to argue with science...

Saturday, September 12
1:00pm Mars Hill at Chattanooga (-37) - Lions do have some athletes. Chatt may be reeling from their opening game loss in a season in a season that they expected (and I'm sure still expect) to win the FCS National Championship. Was not as impressed with Chatt's O-Line as I thought I would be and I was pretty impressed with Mars Hill's D-Line....hmmm....tough call. I'll take the Mocs because I feel bad for them after last week.
1:30pm Morehead State at VMI (-22.5) - Had to be impressed by the Keydets offense last week, the never-say-die attitude of their team, and their QB. Can they live with some modicum of prosperity? I don't know...after they beat Furman last year, they took a week of vacation and then were drilled by WCU and El Cid. Different Coach. I'll take the Kangaroos, but I do hope their D shows up. Morehead always has some athletes, but I think Ball State had a few more.
3:00pm Florida A&M at Samford (-29.5) - Well, I haven't seen the Rattlers play, but I did see the Homewood HomeTeam last Thursday. Some might be worried about a let down or big head, but Sammy just has never seemed like that kind of team to me...other than their playoff game against JaxSt a couple of years ago...That's a big number over a once-proud HBCU team with a lot of talent in the state of FL....I'll take the Bulldogs because I know my selection will be posted in their message board and I will be skewered by the rabid crowd over there if I don't
3:30pm Furman at Virginia Tech (-35) - 'Dins beat the spread....as strong as the SoCon is this year, they may just win the game!
6:00pm Western Carolina at Citadel (-3) - Gotta go with the home team on this one...only because...they are the home team. Have no idea otherwise. I saw Mars Hill do some good things on O & D vs. the Catamounts...and I think I may have seen the Mildcats moving the ball on the Luggage Toters a little bit; they just had a QB who seemed to be cursed with monochromatic vision and he kept throwing it right to the El Cid players. Gonna be very interested in the outcome of this one. No wait - changed my mind - still going with the home team, but I think they only win by 2...they have some experience in winning by 2....dang it!
7:00pm Tennessee Tech at Wofford (-11) - Man, I'm torn on this one. I don't think Tennessee Tech has the experience playing against the option & the discipline on defense to stop the Porch Yappers AND I think the Little Dogs will play keep-away...so, I'll go with Woffy at Home to beat the surprising spread (surprising to me...but those wise-guys know a thing or 3, I've found...All that said, I think TN Tech is a very talented team.
