I don't think I'm going too dig in to much, because I'm frustrated and I just want to get into this bye week and get everyone healthy and focus on Wofford.
But, quick thoughts. I was at the game and I have to say, my first thought was to be frustrated with the pass defense. I'm sure that was colored by giving up a long pass for a touchdown 40 seconds into the game.
But, upon further review, I don't think that is my personal biggest point of concern. We had 4 sacks and the run defense was stout again. We certainly gave up a few pass plays, and they marched down on us in the air on the game winning drive. But the defense played fast and aggressive, which I like. Still think there are some cleanup things in the secondary, but the defense bowed up after that first score.
Really what killed us was the red zone. 5 red zone trips, 2 TDs. If I'm not mistaken, we were 8 for 8 on TD's to red zone trips on the season prior to this game. I think we missed 1 field goal, but trading TDs for kicks in a game this close will come back to bite you.
The guys certainly never game up and played hard the whole way. All you can ask for, really. Just one of those nights when we couldn't get it going in the scoring area.
Also, I think we only had 2 penalties for 10 yards, which is good as well.
As I mentioned, we've got starters out and we are going to need everyone the first weekend in October. Plus, it's a team that runs a lot of option. I'm glad we have an extra week to try and prepare.

Also, I need to give props to bear38 for keeping the crowd stirred up at Tucker Stadium. I also thought that it was a really good Mercer turnout. maybe 300, and we were loud

Didn't see the game but the best thing you said was they never gave up! I can only assume they are learning what it takes to play 4 full quarters in the SOCON, something I read a lot last year that they (lack of experience) had difficulty with. MU lost a lot of close games last year and sure would of been nice to win this one late. Hopefully the week off will get soem key guys back for Wofford. We will be coming in for that one! Go Bears!

Lol! That's a really good point.
