In a post in another thread Bear38 suggested we may need to schedule Florida Tech in the future.
Florida Tech is D2. I'm guessing in the future we will have fewer NAIA and non NCAA D1 teams on the schedule. In fact, when Coach was asked after the Reinhardt game if he would schedule them again his reply was "absolutely not". One could argue different reasons for this comment, not the least of which is having your D1 team risk a loss against NAIA Reinhardt (obviously a real possibility).
But you do need a few breathers on your schedule too. Mercer and Stetson have expressed interest in a continued rivalry. So what do y'all think? What do you think da Bears nonconference schedule will look like in the next few years?

I'd like to see Kennesaw State on the schedule on a regular basis. Also , with ETSU coming on the schedule soon there will be fewer out of conference games.
Not sure if they'll play ETSU next year. I had assumed they would but have seen comments stating otherwise.

I think Kennesaw would make a lot of sense. Also, the inevitable money games get going. Georgia Tech in 2016 and I've heard a rumor about UGA in 2017. I wouldn't mind keeping Stetson going, but I'm biased because they were a big rival of mine personally when I was playing baseball at Mercer.

On scheduling - 1st of all, Mercer Athletics has done an amazing job in scheduling for the 1st 2 years. To have this many home games against teams that had some local interest (Berry, Reinhardt) or a national name recognition (Carnegie Mellon) that allowed the Cubs to grow up and create a BUZZ in Macon has been masterful.
Looking ahead, I have a few ramblings that are just my own uninformed opinions...
* I don't think you'll see a home/home series with Stetson in the future...maybe a 2/1 or even 3/1 is possible
* I think we will see no more than 1 'below FCS' game on the schedule after this year due to the playoff at-large bid implications of scheduling those teams. For example, let's say Mercer goes 11-1 this year and Furman wins out in the SoCon...Furman would get the AutoBid and Mercer would not get a bid because of the games vs. Reinhardt, Ave Maria, and Warner. Those don't 'count' in the eyes of the selection committee...so they would view Mercer as 8-1 and some team that is 10-2 or even 9-3 with a couple of 'quality wins' over playoff teams as superior and they would get the bid, while the Bears stay home.
* Kennesaw is a bit of a 'risky' game for Mercer. They will 'demand' Home/Home and they should be able to get out of the gate FAST with their recruiting capabilities and their relative ease of admission. I think we will see Mercer, smartly, avoid playing KSU until they are viewed by the general public (and potential recruits) as being on a level-playing field with Mercer....so maybe 3 years down the road or so...then it may become an annual 'must-play' game
* Mercer will try to and should play 1 (possibly 2) FBS game(s)/year. The $$$ are too strong not to and it helps in recruiting and is actually a treat for the Mercer players...and WHEN they win one of those...well, I promise, there's not a lot in life that's much sweeter.
* I don't know, but I suspect Mercer will owe Austin Peay a return game next year.
* I believe we are back to an 11 game schedule next year....these 2 years have been a 'freak' occurrence where the NCAA allowed 12 games....something about the phases of the moon or something caused it...and with 8 Conf games, an FBS game....that only leaves 2 more to schedule
* Georgia State and/or Georgia Southern are going to have to figure in there somewhere at some point...as much I don't like playing either of them for different reasons - neither of which has to do with 'fear.'...and those FBS (cough, choke, cough, choke, choke) schools ain't gonna be comin' to Macon.
I have a few hundred more thoughts, most of them as scattered as these...so I'll stop.

Just read that ETSU is not playing a SoCon schedule in 2015. Is that confirmed?

Not because we do not want to play them but because it doesn't benefit them any more. 2-you may have one "non-DI" team on the schedule next year. you have to win 7 division 1 counter games to be eligible for playoffs. 3-You won't see Mercer vs. KSU without a Home/Home deal. If KSU gives in youll see it within a few years. 4-FBS games are becoming harder to come by. I'd say Georgia State is the most likely after we play tech. but we could persuade a SEC team too. you won't see more than one of these in a given year. 5-I wouldn't bet on the home/home deal either. 6-I would be willing to bet 1 non DI and one pioneer or other bottom fcs feeder. 7-well said but I can tell you GA state has interest in playing us. please continue with your plethora of thoughts!

Forgive my ignorance, but to what does the term "home/home" mean in this discussion?

Forgive my ignorance, but to what does the term "home/home" mean in this discussion? When teams sign contracts to play games against each other, one of the provisions is often that they will play 2 games - 1 each at each school's home stadium - home/home Sometimes smaller schools will agree to play 2 away games with a little large school in exchange for 1 home game When FCS Schools sign agreements with FBS schools, they never (as far as I know) include a return Home game for the FCS school.
