Valiant comeback to have a shot to tie it up in the end.
Pass defense obviously killed us early and lack of any offense also early in the game.

i was surprised at all the empty seats for Homecoming. Was it the heat that kept people away or was it all the loses?

I just think it's still a situation where season tickets as so cheap, people can buy seats they may not necessarily use. It's just me and my wife, but I bought 4 because, why not? I invite friends almost every week and I think I've only had unused tickets one time this season, but I'm sure there are people with 4 that only show up with 2 people. And I know that happens a lot.

Hate to think what would it have been there if it was not Homecoming. But the ones who stayed 2nd half were into it. Guess it will be just the Parents in Charleston.

Mercer has lost 7 of the 9 total SoCon games lost by an average of 4 points.
Mercer has lost 8 of the 9 total SoCon games lost by an average of 5.25 points.
Mercer has lost 9 of the 9 total SoCon games lost by an average of of 7.78 points.
1 28 point loss in 2014. 1 14 point loss in 2014. All other losses by 1 score, with the ball, and an opportunity to win in the 4th quarter.
VERY HARD for Team to 'take' & hard for Mercer Fans to understand.

Hate to say this but the coaching for Mercer was brutal. This staff is in trouble IMO because the commitment Mercer has made for football is big and with that you must be successful. Coming "close" doest count anymore for this program. N more excuses allowed about only 3rd year etc etc. This staff is just not getting the job done. Example: 3:15 left in first half MU get a big TO on their own 10 with two time outs. Momentum on their side. Fist play nothing and clock was running....no time out. Next snap was at 1:54. They took all that time to get two plays off. Kids were running on and off the field looking confused. No one took charge of the situation and MU had to punt deep their own territory giving VMI, who moved the ball the entire first half a change to get points...VMI played their last 2 plays on the red zone terribly and MU got lucky. But this 3 minute segment was just one example of how poorly this staff coached this game. And another...the last minute drive was going well, but then all of a sudden MU tries two long pass plays in the end zone? They MU has 2 minutes ( only on time out as MU blew two timeouts early in the second half...thats another example of very poor coaching) why throw 2 long passes there? Plenty of time to be more creative then that. VMI gave MU all the chances to win this game in the second but once again MU fails to win in the end.

The Big Thing on Saturday was not being able to stop VMI's passing game, especially on third down. When you give up 550 yard offense, you should not expect to be in the game.
However, VMI gave some gifts and Mercer had a chance at the end to tie. For the life of me, I don't know why with first down on about the VMI 40 with just under 2 minutes, that you take 2 shots with the long ball. Even if you are successful and score, you're still giving the ball back to a QB that you haven't stopped all day with about 1:40 left on the clock. Your running game was was working and your short passing game was working. Why panic and go for 2 long balls? I realize that we had already wasted a couple timeouts because we couldn't get the plays in on time, but there was no need to panic at this point.

From Southern Pigskin: Offensive Player of the Week- VMI quarterback Al Cobb passed for 391 yards and two touchdowns completing 28 of his 41 passes to lead VMI to a 28-21win over Mercer. The Keydets win in Macon broke a 30 game road losing streak.
That last statement is a BIG ouch.

Chez23 I didn't realize you had already made the same point I made, but made it earlier. What is even more puzzling to me is that if the long pass is successful at this point and you score, you are giving the football back to a QB and offense who has only stopped themselves with just under two minutes to go. It just doesn't make any sense.

The VMI team that I've seen a few times this season is not the same VMI team from the last three or four years. Al Cobb is a really good player. If he stays healthy, VMI can go as far as he can carry them.
