The #4 ranked Chattanooga Mocs head into town this weekend and will likely be our stoutest test yet. Thank goodness the game is at our place. More thoughts later from me, but feel free to chime in if you have thoughts on the game this weekend.
Looking like weather could be a factor again. Ugh.

More thoughts later from me, but feel free to chime in if you have thoughts on the game this weekend. Looking like weather could be a factor again. Ugh. Mocs moved up due to Coastal Carolina's loss to Charleston Southern and are ranked #3...Not sure they shouldn't be #2 as, last week, #2 Illinois State had to come back from being down 24-9 in the 3rd quarter to pull out a 27-24 escape with a TD with under 3 minutes to play defeating the 4-4, 2-3 MVFC, and unranked Indiana State Sycamores. They will NOT be overlooking a Mercer team that barely lost to them last year...by this much...

#3 Chattanooga Mocs Welcome chattanoogamocks! ....as for your 'slogan' or whatever the proper 'message board' term is for that sobriquet under your "C" avatar (BTW - guessing that "C" represents the the 2.0 GPA you hoped to, yet could never quite attain, during your 9 years at the University of Tennessee at Chatt.).... ..."Kool-Aid" although, you unsurprisingly 'spelt' it incorrectly, is a Registered Trademark of Kraft Foods, Inc. I have reported your unauthorized use of their intellectual property to their Chief Legal Counsel. You should be hearing from them soon. Looking forward to bobbing and weaving with you this week...although I do have to admit, unlike the Mercer Players and Coaches, I have lost a bit of my "giddy-up" after living and dying through 8 of 10 'one-score with the ball and a chance to win' SoCon losses over the past 2 years. You think I'd be used to it by now...but I fear my mental capacity to accept defeat is much like this guy's...one of my heroes!

Fubarred, Mercer better score early, they won't get to make a late run to make it look close like last season. (Mocs are giving up less than 7 points a game in the 2nd half this year)

Fubarred, Mercer better score early, they won't get to make a late run to make it look close like last season. (Mocs are giving up less than 7 points a game in the 2nd half this year) ...and they were giving up less than 10 last year if you take out the FBS game with their Parent Institution...and they've played 2 of the lowest scoring offenses in all of FCS in putting up that "less than 7" stat. If you take those games out, they're right back in that 9 point range...right where they were last year. Still a great stat, but all things being reasonably factored in...about the same. Now this is just from cipherin' on my phone calculator. Don't make me whip out a spreadsheet on you!

I guess I'm masochistic or something, because I wanted to see this all at once. I lived through each of these and they were certainly hard to take as a fan, but I can't imagine how difficult this must feel for Mercer's Football Players and Coaches with the blood, sweat, and hours they have put in to get SoCon wins. To come so close, and to go so 'unrewarded' record-wise is really, really hard, I'm sure. Truly amazed that they have been able to continue to come out FIGHTING HARD game after game after facing these kinds of disappointments each week. But they sure have and I expect this coming Saturday, they will be ROARING as they enter, as my favorite pre-game speech-giver, Coach Henry5, once said, "Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more!" More of the above Henry V quote...adapted... Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; Or close the wall up with our Mercer dead. In peace there's nothing so becomes a man As modest stillness and humility; But when the blast of a football war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the Bear!

Here is what a couple of the #3 ranked Chattanooga Mocs think about the Mercer Bears Football Team...
Head Coach Russ Huesman - "I know Mercer is way better than what their record indicates, especially their conference record. They've got good players. Third year of their program and second year in the Southern Conference, what they've done is really remarkable. To be as competitive as they are this early in the process is a testimony to what they're doing over there at Mercer and their coaching staff. Look at last year's game. We very easily could have lost that game. We were actually playing good leading up to that game. We could have lost. We know that we have a tough test ahead of us on Saturday going down there to Mercer, so we have to have a great week of practice."
Do you think Mercer is going to regroup and rally? "I think they are. You haven't once seen them not play hard in any of the games you've seen them play on film. They compete. You have to get a win. You have to get over the hump of winning one like that. We were in the same boat here for a long time here in Chattanooga. We couldn't get that win to get us over the hump and snowball a little bit. They're going to get one, and once they do, I think they're going to be a dangerous team."
On Mercer's defense. "They're playing really good defense. They lost to The Citadel 21-19. They went for two points at the end there and didn't get it. The thing that people don't realize is there's a minute left in the half, and The Citadel's got a third and nine on their own 20-yard line. Mercer's up 10-7 and The Citadel pops up an 80-yard dive, a simple dive play and pops it. That can deflate you, so if you look at it they actually played excellent defense in that game against one of the better teams offensively in the league. They're really capable of playing good defense. We're going to have to play well up front to move the ball on them."
Derrick Craine, RB, JR - "Mercer is a very well-coached team. They're very disciplined. They play very hard. Actually, during our bye-week, I went down and watched Mercer and Wofford play. One thing I really noticed about Mercer is that they play very hard."

UTC Mocs see danger in Mercer's close losses"The Mercer Way," as it is referred to by Bears coach Bobby Lamb, hasn't translated yet into wins in Southern Conference football play this season. But they've been close, with their four league losses by a combined 13 points. The nationally third-ranked University of Tennessee at Chattanooga doesn't want to become the Bears' first victim, and the Mocs have constant reminders in their lockers as to how close they were to losing to Mercer just a season ago. Mercer came to Finley Stadium during the Mocs' undefeated romp through the SoCon in 2014 and gave them a scare, with UTC holding off the visitors 38-31. It was UTC's only SoCon game decided by single digits. "There's been a lot of talk about that," Mocs linebacker Nakevion Leslie said. "They have a bunch of good players, and we gave up seven big plays. When you do that, you're not supposed to win, but luckily the offense was rolling." Lamb said this year's close losses — by one point in overtime to Wofford, by three at Western Carolina, by seven to Virginia Military Institute and by two at The Citadel when the Bears failed on a tying two-point-conversion try with 3:12 to play — "have been very difficult." "We keep battling day in and day out," Lamb said Tuesday. "Our guys have got to believe in our process and believe in what we're doing here, and we continue to build this program. I really believe we're getting closer and closer to getting that win. We've got a resilient bunch of kids — that's just kind of the way it's been here at Mercer — and we're going to continue to recruit those types of kids that can overcome these obstacles, so we've got to continue to keep our eyes on the prize. "The bottom line is that we've got to execute better. We've got great effort, great intensity; we've just got to continue to execute better in tougher situations." UTC coach Russ Huesman knows all too well about close battles. The ability to win tight games is an acquired mindset, and it wasn't until the Mocs won 35-28 at Appalachian State on a Leslie interception return for a score with 2:52 remaining on the first Saturday in November 2013 that Huesman felt his team finally got over that hump. "It's one of those things: You've got to get a win," Huesman said. "You have to get over the hump of winning one like that. We were in the same boat — we couldn't get a win to get over the hump and snowball a little bit — but Mercer is going to get one, and once they do, they'll be a dangerous team."
