Mercer, with wins over Furman and Samford can finish with a winning record at 6-5 and they can stand alone, in 4th place in the SoCon with a cumulative net point differential of only -2 points in the 3 games with the teams finishing ahead of them in 1st through 3rd place (Chattanooga, The Citadel, and Western Carolina).
In order for this to happen, the Bears will need to, of course, win those 2 games AND...
...Wofford will need to lose to Samford this week and Furman the following week, which will generate something like this in the SoCon standings...
Chatt - 1st or 2nd - 1st @ 6-1 (with win over CIT, 1st due to head-to-head with CIT) or 2nd @ 5-2 with loss to CIT)
CIT - 1st or 2nd - 1st @ 7-0 (with win over Chatt) or @ 6-1 (with loss to Chatt, 2nd due to head-to-head with Chatt)
WCU - 3rd @ 5-2 (with win over VMI, 3rd due to head-to-head with Chatt if Chatt loses to CIT) or 3rd @ 4-3 (with loss to VMI)
Mercer - 4th @ 3-4
Furman - 5th @ 3-4 (5th due to head-to-head with Mercer)
Samford - 6th @ 2-5 (6th due to head-to-head with Wofford)
Wofford - 7th @ 2-5
VMI - 8th @ 2-5 (with win over WCU, 8th due to head-to-head with with Samford & Wofford) or 8th @ 1-6 (with loss to WCU)
This would be a very solid 2nd year in the SoCon for Mercer.
We all know, at this point, what could have been...an obvious PI call @ TTU, a few more made kicks in several games, scoring a TD with 1st down from the 4 YL late in the 4th Q vs. Woffy, picking up 1 more 1st down or hitting an open receiver vs. CIT & VMI, getting 1 more stop on a 4th down vs. WCU (these are just the obvious plays - many other things 'could have been' in each of the 5 losses to turn them around)...and the Bears could be sitting at 9-0, ranked in the Top 5 in FCS, and thinking about playoff possibilities and getting measured for SoCon Championship rings with 1 win in their final 2 games. Alas, those very attainable possibilities were not to be for this year's Bears, but the possibilities mentioned above are STILL in play. The Bears still have much to play for and will need GREAT SUPPORT from BearNation in these final 2 games to help them get 'over the hump.'
BE THERE or you might miss out. How many people didn't go to the Chatt game that wished they had now? Don't miss out - Support the Bears with you attendance and your LOUD CHEERING - in Greenville, SC vs. FU and on Sr. Day vs. Samford in Macon!!!!
