I think there is a rule (maybe the one cited) that fewer than 7 D1 wins is for all intents and purposes a bar to the playoffs. I don't recall any team ever being selected without meeting that threshold. Read the rule book. I provided you a link. The ONLY number of D-I wins in the rule book is 6. It was changed from 7 to 6, the same season that the number of slots was increased to 24. If they have plenty of teams with 7 wins, and then only select teams with 7 wins, it's their call, but a team with 6 can be selected. Prior to the increase of playoff positions, a team was required to have 7 D-I wins. The number 6 is also consistent with FBS D-I wins for bowl eligibility. So if Mercer wins out, they would be playoff eligible. Interesting.
