I believe, if the SoCon, somehow, took over the NCAA FCS Playoff Selection Committee in a coup...and picked ALL of the SoCon's 8 teams for the field, that those teams could have finished 8-0 last Saturday. Assuming the leaders of this coup weren't entirely biased and 'forced' ALL the SoCon teams to play in Week 1 (no Byes), here's how they could have finished 8-0...
Using the STATS FCS Rankings from 11/22 to determine Byes/Bids (except for 'taking' all 8 SoCon Teams), keeping all of the AQ's as would be required...and matching 'em up, pretty much, with the SoCon Final Standings, I came up with this Round 1 bracket...
(AQ = Automatic Qualifier - Conference Champion) and applied "Massey Matchup" to the projected games...
(AQ) Jacksonville State - Bye
North Dakota State - Bye
(AQ) McNeese State - Bye
(AQ) Illinois State - Bye
Portland State - Bye
Sam Houston State - Bye
James Madison - Bye
(AQ) Charleston Southern - Bye
* South Dakota State vs. (AQ) Chattanooga (Massey Matchup - SDSU by 2...but Chatt wins by 3 in Finley Stadium) - SoCon 1-0
* Coastal Carolina - The Citadel (Massey Matchup - El Cid by 5) - SoCon 2-0
* (AQ) Richmond - Western Carolina (Massey Matchup - Richmond by 1...but WCU wins by 3 in the Whee) - SoCon 3-0
* William & Mary @ Wofford (Massey Matchup - W&M by 4)...but I think the Terriers get up for the game and pull off a minor upset - SoCon 4-0
* (AQ) Southern Utah @ Samford (Massey Matchup - Southern Utah by 4) but WE know Sammy was better at the end of the year, so they win - SoCon 5-0
* (AQ) Colgate @ Furman (Massey Matchup - Colgate by 1) but FU makes the XP this time and wins in OT - SoCon 6-0
* (AQ) Duquesne - Mercer (Massey Matchup - Duquesne by 2...but Mercer wins by 2 in Macon) - GO BEARS! - SoCon 7-0
* (AQ) Dayton - VMI (Massey Matchup - VMI by 2)
- SoCon 8-0Note: In order to get 6 more SoCon teams in there, I had to eliminate the bottom 6 as determined by STATS FCS Rankings...sorry guys...YER OUT!!!
