Great showing by the SoCon in the playoffs today. Certainly legitimizes the SoCon as a 2 bid conference. The conference champ won convincingly and our at large (Citadel) beat a team that is gonna be moving DOWN to the Scrum Belt. I have to give my son a hard time though. He is a plebe at West Point and they have had an awful season. He asked if Mercer could beat Army. My reply? We beat Chatty, Chatty drilled Fordham, Fordham beat Army. Why yes son, we could!!

And STRONG showing be BDMU ad FUBeAR, who teamed up for a FCS Football Bracket Challenge and were a cool 7-1 today.

Friggin New Hampshire lost to a team they beat by 20 in the regular season. Oh well, 7-1 is good any day.

Now THAT is some excellent parenting. Honest and straightforward without any namby-pamby sugar-coating. I'm sure the Mules would play hard and disciplined football, wouldn't quit until the final whistle, and all that...but you steered him straight....the Bears would WAX their, um, mules.

I hope everyone who is a Mercer Football Fan watched all 8 Playoff Games on ESPN3 today as I did. Nothing like using their multi-screen feature and following 4 games at once. Really saw some excellent football, kids busting their rear-ends, coaches working HARD to win, etc.

4 AWESOME & MEANINGFUL Games the following Sat!
2 AMAZING & MEANINGFUL Games the Sat after that!

That's 22 MEANINGFUL Post-Season College Football Games in 4 weeks (and then a lull until 1/9/16 before the FCS National Championship Game)

...or you can watch 76 mostly mediocre teams give half-speed efforts in 38 meaningless Bowl games over 4-5 weeks and then a semi-kinda-sorta-but-not-really 3 game playoff.

FCS Playoffs ALL THE WAY for me...not even close. I'll half pay attention to those other 3 "playoff" games, but I would much rather watch hours of reruns of Bob Ross demonstrating how to make the leaves on the willow trees so "just right" than a minute of any of those other pre-fabbed pretend "bowl contests."

IMHO there are AT LEAST twice as many bowl games as there should be. Just look at a pic of the Birmingham Bowl from last year. Almost nobody in the stands. And App State and GasU, who finished middle of the SoCon pack their last year, are dominating the Scum Belt from the start and "bowl eligible". I agree with you FUBeAR, FCS is REAL football.

I believe, if the SoCon, somehow, took over the NCAA FCS Playoff Selection Committee in a coup...and picked ALL of the SoCon's 8 teams for the field, that those teams could have finished 8-0 last Saturday. Assuming the leaders of this coup weren't entirely biased and 'forced' ALL the SoCon teams to play in Week 1 (no Byes), here's how they could have finished 8-0...

Using the STATS FCS Rankings from 11/22 to determine Byes/Bids (except for 'taking' all 8 SoCon Teams), keeping all of the AQ's as would be required...and matching 'em up, pretty much, with the SoCon Final Standings, I came up with this Round 1 bracket...
(AQ = Automatic Qualifier - Conference Champion) and applied "Massey Matchup" to the projected games...

(AQ) Jacksonville State - Bye
North Dakota State - Bye
(AQ) McNeese State - Bye
(AQ) Illinois State - Bye

Sitting in 12th place out of 113 entries...but only 4.3 points behind the leader.

If our friends in Costa Vegas Rica (5Dimes) are correct, with our picks this weekend, we should again finish 7-1 and score over 100 points.

For only a 3rd year 'program' and our 1st year in entering this FCS Bracket Challenge, we are doing pretty dang well so far...it's the way of the BEAR!

Wow - Are y'all as exhausted as I am? 13.5 hours of FCS Playoff Football today. Great, great action and excitement in every game.

I heard there were some other Semi-Pro games today as well. Doubtful that any of those games were nearly as exciting as watching true student athletes playing their hearts out for the Teams and their SCHOOLS! I don't know though...didn't care to watch those other games. I did hear something about the GaSou game though. Wondering if their fans might have enjoyed a Playoff Game a bit more today...if they could have made it to the Playoffs...which is pretty doubtful...But, hey, they'll enjoy the heck out of waging a (not)hard-fought battle with their age-old & bitter rival, those Toledo State Zips, in a single 'bowl' game for one of the many Participation Trophies FBS Football is handing out to mediocre and losing teams this year.

Anyway...not a great day for the SoCon with Chatt & El Cid both falling in the 2nd round. El Cid made a decent showing, but you can't put the ball on the ground 115 times and expect to win a playoff game. Chatt., who was completely screwed in the Seeding/Pairing process, took the #1 Seeded & #1 Ranked team in FCS to OT, but fell just a bit short. Yep, that's the same Chatt. team that your Mercer Bears whipped earlier this season...playing down past the wire with the #1 Team in the Country. The future is VERY bright my fellow Bears; very bright indeed!!!

Also...the Bracketology game of FUBeAR and BearDownMU was not so skrong today....4-4 and only 53.4 points, leaving us with 4 Teams (Jax St, Ill. St, NDSU, and UNI) of 8 remaining in the Quarterfinals and a 2 round point total of 140.2/11-5 record, dropping from 12th to 29th place. We do have what will be the favored team, advancing in 3 of those 4 games...so our entry may not be dead just yet. McNeese State really hurt us....had the ball 1st and goal at the 1 yard line to go in for, possibly, the game-winning, go-ahead score...and they ended up punting on 4th down from the 39 yard line. YES - they went backward 38 yards in 3 plays...which doesn't even take into account that they had an INT reversed on review during that FABULOUS offensive series. If the Cowboys hadn't shot themselves in the crotch, we would have had at least 1 team in every game. Really hurts that we had them advancing to the Semis....I hate McNeese State tonight!!!

Oh well....my Roswell Hornets and BearDownMU's Cartersville Purple Hurricanes will be playing in back-to-back GHSA State Championships games at the Georgia Dome next Saturday night...so we have that going for us...which is nice!
