It's employed by just about every D1 college basketball team I've ever watched: A player gets 2 early fouls in the first half, and they immediately go to the bench. We saw it against UTC with Jelks and Leonard. This may have been the spark that allowed UTC to go on a huge run to take a commanding lead.
The penalty for fouling out of a game is going to the bench. By sending your player to the bench with only 2 fouls, you're accepting the maximum punishment with 3 more fouls to give. Of course I understand the logic they are using: You want to have your stars available to put in the game for as long as possible. Well, this logic only makes sense if the player STILL fouls out of the game at some point. If they don't foul out, all we've done is give the other team a huge advantage. Jelks finished the game with a total of 3 fouls (in 22 minutes).
Let me first say that I have 100% confidence in Coach Hoffman and everything he does. I fully support him in every way and every decision. This is a nationwide topic and is ingrained into our game and how it's played.
I'd rather have my star foul out with 10 minutes left in the game -- and use him normally -- instead of sitting him for 10 minutes in the 1st half and realize I could have used him for the entire game. OR the fouls mean nothing once the game ends and your star plays their normal amount of minutes.

In the same UTC/Mercer game, we saw the flip side of this too. In the 2nd half, one of UTC's key players sat on the bench for 9 minutes while Mercer made their run to get back into the game. That's the common denominator during both teams runs.
Oh, and neither team had a player foul out.

I agree I don't like the 2 fouls rule. But mostly because we are so deep. Seriously, a ton of guys get good minutes. I'd rather let them have 3 in the first. After the 3rd sit them, because we've got people that can come it. And, to your point, we can potentially hold off the run longer.

Yea I like your point about how deep we are. That gives us even more reason to not let fouls dictate the team on the floor.

The 'rule' used to be 3 fouls before you sit in the 1st half and 4 in the 2nd...way back when I was a lad (post-peach baskets & pre-AirJordans). I wonder if the 3-point shot, giving teams the ability to score more points on fewer possessions, somehow affected that 'rule.'
