On Thursday the Bears visit Johnson City to take on the 11-7 Buccaneers. Both teams are 4-1 in the SoCon and UTC is responsible for both teams' one lose.
Sagarin has Mercer at 136 and ETSU at 167 with ETSU favored to win by 1.

ETSU comes into this game after a loss to UTC. Prior to that they won 6 straight over weak competition. Narrowly winning by 4 @ Samford, by 3 at home vs. UNC-G, and by 4 on the road at N.C. Central (RPI 332).
ETSU does not rebound well, and now they have to play Mercer who is +11 per game. ETSU ranks 8th in the SoCon in defensive rebound percentage. If not for the Citadel chucking and ducking, they'd be a fraction from dead last.
Home court is a factor in any game, and I'm sure their fans will be amped up for this one. I just don't see ETSU overcoming their rebounding woes.

Jelks having 4 fouls with 14 minutes left in the game is no bueno.

That sucks but no shame in losing to a top 4 conference team on their court.

I've never in my life seen a game like that. Stephon Jelks couldn't even breathe on the court without getting called for a foul. He basically didn't even get to play. It took overtime and home court for ETSU to barely beat Mercer, without Jelks in the game. The rebounding battle was also even at 37-37, without Jelks!! All this game does is reinforce to me that ETSU can't hang with Mercer.

To be fair to ETSU, they did miss a lot of shots which they might have normally made. I expect them to be a threat in the tourney as they do have some talent.

It's not hard to figure out. ETSU barely won by a miracle against a team without their top scorer and top rebounder.

To be fair to ETSU, they did miss a lot of shots which they might have normally made. I expect them to be a threat in the tourney as they do have some talent. Their only threats are Guyn and Cromer, and they both hit a high percentage (15/37 shooting for 41%). If anything, ETSU could shoot worse another time around. Especially considering that Cromer and Guyn did almost all of their damage on 2-pointers, where Jelks was missing in action.

Just for clarity, Jelks is not the *entire* team. I'm not trying to say that. The rest of the Bears were excellent, and the bench played great in a fill in role. They were probably gassed by the end, because Jelks was never able to come back in. The great news is that this team can still compete on the road without their top scorer/rebounder on the court. A 4 point lead at the half and Jelks coming back had me feeling good, but they hit him for fouls 3, 4 and 5 in a flash. One of them it didn't even look like he made contact on the replay.
