Really bummed that VA is so far away. I would love to be able to go to the game this weekend.
Just a couple of thoughts looking at VMI on paper.
The positives for us:
They give up a lot of points. Opponents are averaging 44.2 PPG against them. To this point, I feel pretty good about our offense. We have strength in the OLine, our backs have performed very well, and #7 is tough to defend. One would think we can score some points.
They have allowed 17 rushing TDs in 4 games. Again, I think our strength is in the run game, so that looks like a favorable matchup for us if we can deal with their DLine.
They look like the are susceptible in punt coverage. They are giving up an average return of 23.7 yards per punt. That's a big number. Saw good things from #13 this past weekend. Maybe he will have a big day.
The challenges for us:
They throw it around. A lot. As mentioned on this board before, we've had some struggles in pass coverage. Their Freshman QB Al Cobb looks like he's got some game. He's thrown for nearly 1000 yards in 4 games and is completing passes at 66.9%. Pretty impressive.
Just based on the stats, he doesn't look particularly mobile, 20 yards on 9 attempts in 4 games. Seems like he sits in the pocket and slings it. So, that means we need to get pressure and hopefully we can be a little more aggressive because it doesn't look like he makes a lot of plays with his legs.
They have a couple of backs averaging 4.5 and 4.7 yards per carry, Deon Watts and Jabari Turner. Those two have 110 of their 137 carries.
They have 5 receivers with more than 10 catches and the distribution is pretty good. Individual receiver catches in order are 23, 16, 16, 16, 10. So he spreads it around. (In contrast, for us #3 has 18 catches and the next closest is #38 with 8 catches.) Their main receiver, Aaron Sanders, is averaging right at 100 yards per game receiving.
They are averaging 29.5 points per game and about 425 yards per game. So we might be in shootout land.
Miscellaneous stuff:
They have 6 sacks in 4 games. Don't know what that tells us, but given the offensive numbers they give up, it doesn't look like there is a major pass rush.
Their net punting average 22.6 yards. That could be good for us in the field position game. But hard to tell if both teams are running up and down the field.
Anyway, quick and dirty, and just from looking at the numbers. Anyone else have any info?
