The Bears may have bought stock in broom in the offseason, as they ran off another sweep this past weekend against a good Xavier club. 3-1 win in extra innings on Friday, 5-3 win on Saturday, and a lumber convention 18-14 win on Sunday.
Thoughts so far early in the year: Pitching is young and was a bit of a question mark, but I think overall has been really good so far this season. Ryan Askew has shined to this point. 2 starts, 2 wins, and a 2.70 ERA and a .191 Batting Average Against (metal bats, people. That is strong.) And, over all the primary starters have a .217 Batting Average Against. The back of the staff has had a bit of a rough go so far, and the 18-14 screamer didn't help.
Offensively, you guessed it, Kyle Lewis is leading the way. In 7 games he is batting .462 (12-26) with 3 HRs and 8 RBI. And a stupid OPS of 1.446.
Coming off a big Sunday, Ryan Hagan is batting .393 with 9 RBI. Hagan and Lewis have both scored 10 Runs each.
They are part of 4 starting Bears batting over .300. Matt Meeder (.320) and Jose Hernandez (.304) round out that list.
Still can get better, but a 6-1 start is a 6-1 start.

I just wish their OOC schedule was stronger. Do you think their recent success has hurt them with scheduling? Meaning higher teams are reluctant to play da Bears?

It's an interesting question. Let's check it out. Here's our Massey Rating Mercer - 39
Opponent - Massey Rating Radford - 181 Xavier - 248 Florida A&M - 241 Austin Peay - 132 Georgia State - 187 College of Charleston - 72 Georgia Southern - 78 Kennesaw State - 112 UGA - 62 Georgia Tech - 9 Savannah State - 267 Butler - 256
So, UGA, Georgia Tech, College of Charleston and Georgia Southern are all in the Top 100. That really isn't all that bad.
Baseball isn't like football and basketball in that the losses don't hurt you as much, obviously. So I don't know if there would be "fear" in scheduling as it were. I think because there are so many games, and they are series, and the fact that a lot of northern teams have to travel south early in the year because it's just too cold up there, makes baseball scheduling generally more difficult. This seems like a pretty decent schedule to me. And, worth noting, Radford won 45 games last year and just lost to Vanderbilt in the NCAA Regionals.

a road series with C of C is HIGH level of difficulty. Plus 2 of 3 on the road with Kennesaw is solid. I also think they thought Radford would be a much higher rated team in the opening home series. Still too early to label teams completely.
On topic to Xavier, that was an awesome series. Amazing effort to get the sweep. Any random inning this Mercer lineup can explode.
