Georgia Tech Football: Opponent Previews - Mercer Bears"They should not be competitive with Tech" "But I can’t imagine many Tech fans will be interested enough to show up for this game if cousin Lily is having a wedding that day. Also cannot imagine Mercer’s small fan base will help make up the difference. This will be a game for Tech to work on techniques and give non-starters game experience." "we should score 50+ and win" "we can go up by 3 tds early, start subbing and win by 3-4 tds" "our backups had better be scoring as well" "Anything less than a 30-point win will be a disappointment." "it should be an easy win" "Tech...a superior team and outmatch them in nearly every category" "epic football beatdown" "if Tech has a problem with Mercer,...PJ had better be getting his golf clubs cleaned because he will be needing them soon FULL-TIME" "there is a massive difference between FBS and FCS"

I didn't realize Matt Shiel was gone. That seems strange. 1 year at Auburn, 1 year at Mercer, and not a trace on Google about a transfer to another school.

I believe he has transferred continents, unfortunately. Heckuva a Punter. With some polish and experience, I would have thought he would have had an NFL shot, but I think the Siren Song of the Outback was just too strong for him to continue his walkabout in the USA....or maybe it was just 1 or more 'sheilas.' BTW - All of the above is speculation/rumor. Nothing OFFICIAL in this, nor in most, if not all of my posts.

"Never heard of them, so we will win by 50."

Perfect situation for Mercer to put a scare in Tech. They'll be getting over their trip to Ireland. Maybe won't take lil ol Mercer too serious.

Just my opinion, but games between big FBS programs and FCS teams, when they play is important. There are plenty of FCS teams that are good enough to put a scare into big programs. While the FBS teams typically have a size and speed advantage, their biggest advantage is probably depth. They can just keep running out big talented players late into ball games that FCS teams struggle to match. One big advantage to FCS program is scheduling. Sometimes the FCS team will be wedged on the schedule between some big conference games or a big travel weekend. I definitely think that helps Mercer level the playing field some. Also, Mercer has the benefit of seeing a lot of option football. Most teams GT plays will only see the option once a year. SoCon teams see the offense a bunch. Bobby Lamb has seen option teams on the schedule for 30 years with Georgia Southern, Wofford, the Citadel, etc. Interestingly, Mercer will play the option the week before against the Citadel. That's a big advantage for Mercer, who can literally spend weeks on defending the offense. GT's offense, oddly enough, has struggled at times against smaller quicker defenses. It was a couple of years ago they really struggled putting away Gardner Webb. I'd expect Mercer to give a good account of themselves. Keep the score manageable at the half, stay standing after they try to land some haymakers, make a big play or two, and see what happens.
