Not too much love for a healthy Alex Lakes. He only lead the SoCon in rushing in 2014. Of course, that was two years ago. There are a lot of really good running backs in the SoCon. Lakes is one, but he's not the only one. I never claimed that Lakes was the only good running back in the SoCon. Let's compare over the last two years: Long - 1899 yards Lakes - 1799 Renew - 1600 Craine - 1742 Newsome - 1607 Since Lakes only started 3 games in 2015 due to injuries, I would say that his rushing stats are pretty impressive.

He's a good running back. Preseason accolades are almost exclusively what you did last season. Last season Lakes didn't put up the same numbers the other guys did. This happens all the time. Duncan Fletcher, Furman's TE, was all conference as a sophomore. He was a preseason first team all conference as a junior. He spent much of the 2015 season battling injuries and missed a lot of time. He's still a really good TE. Arguably the league's most impressive TE all things being equal. He did not have a great 2015 season, and so he is not selected for the 2016 preseason team. I get your argument, but these preseason teams are almost exclusive based on last season's results.

Are you sure? In 2015 Mercer's QB, John Russ, who was NOT named Preseason All-SoCon, had about the same number of total yards responsible, almost twice the number of TD's responsible, and half of the interceptions thrown as the Preseason All-SoCon 2nd Team QB. Oh...and Mercer's Chandler Curtis barely had any stats in 2015 (2 PR's for 7 YD's & 1 KOR for 28 YDS; 0 TD's). Love Chandler and, if he stays injury free in 2016, he will be 1st Team All-SoCon WR AND RS...but, if your premise is correct, there's no way he should have been named Preseason All-SoCon for 2016. ...but those stats are actually better than the guy who was a Pre-Season All-SoCon RS in 2015...he had a TOTAL of 1 PR for 3 yards in 2014.

Mercer runs a two TE offense with one in the H back position over 50% of the snaps. So they have to be good blockers to start with and Mercer had the 4th best rushing offense in the SoCon in 2015. The TEs caught 48 passes for 679 yards and 6 TDs. Primarily Walker and Brown. I don't think any other team comes close to these numbers.

Just for the sake of argument, Fletcher caught 36 passes for 442 yards in 2014. Those were virtually identical numbers (more catches, more yards, fewer touchdowns) than UTC's All American Faysal Shafaat. As a side note, Shafaat was an animal. I think 6'5 250 and moved like a cat. www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxA3PNajefA

The TEs caught 48 passes for 679 yards and 6 TDs. Primarily Walker and Brown. I don't think any other team comes close to these numbers. To add to this topic. Grant Radakovich, a Day 1 Bear, also was an outstanding blocker in that role for the Bears over the past 3 seasons. Grant will be wearing a slightly different shade of Orange this season though ( GRANT RADAKOVICH ), having graduated from Mercer and now pursuing a graduate degree in a field that was, surprisingly, not available at Mercer, as I understand. He kind of has an 'in' with his new program ( DAN RADAKOVICH - Director of Athletics ), but I wouldn't be one bit surprised to see him making a solid contribution and road-grading some ACC DE's and LB's this year. Losing him will hurt, but this is one of those very rare situations where a Graduate 5th Year Transfer is not a negative situation in any way. By the way, Grant was a Center in HS and I suspect his TE blocking contribution will be ably picked up by another former HS Offensive Lineman. In fact, he was also Mercer's starting Left Tackle for every game of the 2013 Season. Sam Arrington moved to TE last season, took a few weeks to adjust to his new role and then came on like a CHAMP when Brown, Radakovich, and Owings were all unavailable. I'm not sure how many balls Sam will catch, but I know he will catch a lot of SoCon DE's and LB's on their heels (or backs) after he engages them with great technique and leverage (he was a champion wrestler in HS), quick feet, and his relentless style of play. The Bears also lost another TE, who would have been a major contributor over the past 2 seasons, but injuries limited him throughout his tenure in Macon. Derek Owings transferred to Mercer from Eastern Michigan and did a great job in there, when he was able to be in there and playing at 100%, but, after graduating, he has moved on as well ( Derek Owings - Utah State - Strength & Conditioning ) to a new program and a graduate degree. On the Plus side, Mercer redshirted 2 TE's last season that I understand have made a lot of noise both blocking and receiving since they arrived in Maconga. Chase Westfall and Trey Peppers seem to be cut from the same mold as Robert Brown and Sam Walker. So that's 5 TE's that should all be able to make those key blocks at the point of attack AND, in most cases, be a mismatch (via their various combinations of assets - speed, route-running ability, hands, height, strength) for opposing LB's. Oh...1 more...Incoming FR Chris Ellington, a 6-4, 230 LB 3 Star prospect ( 247 Sports Profile - Chris Ellington ) who had 8 FBS offers, including 2 P5's. I'm thinking he won't redshirt this year. What does a 6 TE Offense look like? Nah...guess not....wouldn't be surprised to see all 5 of them in the game at the same time though, perhaps with Johnny McCrary in a single-back BearCat formation in short-yardage formations. Stack the line and Walker, Brown, et al. will run by you for an easy TD pass. Don't, and with the Bear's excellent O-Line, they'll run QB PowerLoad and mash out 5 or 6 yards...or more. Ooooh, so much to work with. Can't wait to see what they do with it!
