Now that I have had a little time to get the emotion out from last night, I want to take a minute to look at some good takeaways. I may start doing this as a regular feature that people can participate in. Here are my thoughts on the good to great things from last nights game.
Taking Care of the Football - The stat sheet says two turnovers. However, one was a strip sack on the first snap from scrimmage and the second was an INT on basically the last play of the game as a last gasp trying to force the ball downfield. All in all, the receivers and backs did a great job taking care of the football. Always important no matter who you are playing.
Defensive Adjustments - The first quarter was a mess, but the D went on lock down for the remainder of the game. And the first two scores were a big play and fumble close to their red zone. First game, jitters, getting into the flow? No idea, but after we settled down, the D played great. 162 yards allowed in the first quarter. After that? 33 in the 2nd, 61 in the 3rd and 62 in the 4th.
Payton Usher - Not gonna lie, he's always been one of my favorites. Has had a hard time staying healthy over his career but when he plays, he get's it done. Worth noting he is a running back that is 5'7'' and weighs 170 lbs. He had 10 carries for 89 yards, a gaudy 8.9 yards per carry. I'm speculating, but I would imagine that's more workload than was originally intended as Alex Lakes looked like he might have been fighting something at times last night. Like he might have been nicked up. But Usher was really good and boy is it fun to watch him run.
John Russ's Feet - #7 rushed for 74 yards on 10 carries. 7.4 ypc is pretty darn good. And those yards were from him making good decisions on the read option or getting himself out of trouble. My memory may be bad, but I feel like he was better at making the correct reads last night as well as being smart on when to run. He makes the first guy miss a lot too.
Well, those are my big ones. What say you, peanut gallery?
