Just thought I would share this all with you since our little message board is about 2 years old now.
I finally had the time to get Google Analytics set up to track site traffic. I had been meaning to do it forever and just never got around to it. Stats have now been tracking for 1 full month. Apologies for the explanations if you already are familiar with site analytics. Just thought I'd give them in case there are any non-tech/web folks. All counts are rounded to the nearest 100.
Sept. 6 - October 6
4,000 sessions (This is essentially site visits. Think about it like the front door opens and someone walks in. Doesn't matter if they've been before or not.)
1000 users (So this is unique visitors. It's actually fairly complicated how this is calculated, but it accounts for different web connections, ip addresses, etc., etc. So it's probably a pretty true number)
21,200 page views (This is actual clicks on pages through the site. So if you came to the main page, clicked on "Football", then clicked on 2 threads, that would be 4 page views)
5.3 page views per session (Self explanatory, but this is an idea about how much people move through the site each visit)
5:30 Average session duration (How long people stay on the site one they get there)
26.64% Bounce rate (Bounce rate is basically if people come to the site and then leave only having visited 1 page. This is to account for accidental visits, effectively. And stress that sites should generally compel you to do and see more. Usually any bounce rate less that 40% is excellent. Less than 25% is astronomical. So we are doing extremely well in this category.)
I'm actually really happy with this, to be honest. It tells me what I suspected, we have a lot of people that come and read but not necessarily participate. I thought that would be the case when I made the decision to leave the board open. Meaning, you don't have to register in order to view the board or comment as a guest. Obviously, there are drawbacks to that as well, because people can anonymously say terrible stuff (as we saw this past basketball season), but since the site was new, I wanted as many people to be able to see it as possible.
So, I hope we can still get the active users number up, but this is pretty solid on over all traffic.
So, tell you friends to come to the board and comment!
Thanks to all of you for helping make this little project successful and a place where we can talk about Mercer Athletics!
