I just did this (relatively) quick analysis of the Performance of Football Coaching Staff's in the SoCon over the past 2 years. I subjectively evaluated the OVERALL Player Talent Level of all 9 Teams (though I haven't posted those rankings here, I ranked Mercer as #7 in overall Talent Level - just my opinion - feel free to disagree), then assessed that vs. their average finish in the SoCon Rankings in those years (with a little 'fudge factor' for ETSU since they weren't actually IN the SoCon in 2015).
The math is a little quirky as a negative number indicates superior Coaching performance relative to Talent and a positive number indicates that the Talent was better than the results attained, ostensibly due to Coaching performance. A zero indicates that the average finish in the standings was about equal to the Talent Level. The further away from zero, plus or minus, indicates the magnitude of the Coaching over- or under-performance. If the Coaching Performance Rank's were tied, I rated the Team with the higher average finish as higher, to eliminate ties in this Ranking. Certainly, many other factors could come into play, but for the sake of getting an apples-to-apples comparison, we have to assume that all other variables were approximately the same for each Team.
Anyway, I found the Rankings interesting and also approximate how I would have subjectively ranked the Coaching performance, with the possible exception of VMI, in that I think their Staff has actually outperformed Talent level to some degree despite their 0 Ranking in this analysis. Your thoughts?
1) CIT -2
2) Mercer -1.5
3) Woffy -1
4) ETSU -1
5) Furman 0
6) VMI 0
7) Chatt 0.5
8) WCU 0.5
9) Sammy 3
BTW - the catalyst for preparing this analysis was that a couple of Sammy posters (Homewood Homers) on another message board are all but claiming that Sammy's current Head Coach is Knute Rocke AND Vince Lombardi AND Bear Bryant AND Tom Landry AND Don Shula AND Nick Saban AND Bill Belichick all rolled up into one...but better. I wanted to see if they might be correct. When I posted this analysis, they tried to claim that Sammy's talent level was actually only better than ETSU or maybe they meant Mercer or VMI as they didn't specify, but claimed it was 8th out of the 9 SoCon Teams. This is a Team that currently has 5 Players in the NFL, numerous FBS Transfers, several current NFL prospects, Pre- and Post-Season Offensive & Defensive POY's, and MANY All SoCon selections during that time frame, including an All SoCon O-Lineman that didn't even PLAY O-Line. He HAD to be GREAT to pull that off, huh? Hated to see CIT come out on top, but there's no denying that the 2 Coaching Staff's they have had there have done an outstanding job...and then...there's the other end of the list.
