I just wanted to say how happy us Samford Bulldogs are (most if not all of us) that Mercer has joined the SoCon. I remember you all from back in the TAAC days. Looks like you are quickly getting your act together with football. Outside of this Saturday, best of luck to you guys in your maiden SoCon voyage!

Thanks! I was a baseball player at Mercer in the TAAC days. Remember them well! We are all really excited about coming into the SoCon. Our program is coming together nicely, I think. Sure has been a lot of fun the last couple of years!

The Samford folks sure seem more hospitable than the fans of our first SoCon opponent were. Believe me we are glad to be here! And a bit surprised to tell you the truth.

I never thought Mercer would add football. Just as surprised that Stetson has added football as well. Between the two, Mercer most seems to be all in, with scholarships and facilities...etc. Still it's just cool to see these old TAAC schools adding football. Back in the day, we were like the lone ranger of TAAC football!

Bigdog1968- Thanks for not being a Furman fan. I look forward to a friendly rivalry between the "Sister Schools" of Samford and Mercer. I know of a good bit of people that are contemplating the drive to Birmingham this weekend. I'll be out of town, but I hope to see your pretty campus soon.

I too want to say that I am happy to see Mercer in the fold. Not only football, but terrific baseball, and "Duke Beatin Basketball" is just unbelievable. I have seen Mercer(via streaming) twice now, and I am impressed with the tenacity of your football team. Those players just do not quit, and you have every right to be proud of them. The game Saturday is nearing a sellout status, but don't let that concern you too much. Our bowl shaped stadium can accommodate several thousand more above seating capacity. It might be a good idea to bring lawn chairs, however. I can assure you that you won't be turned away at the gate. Have a safe trip. Those players just do not quit, and you have every right to be proud of them. Thanks so much for saying this!!! I 'own' one of those li'l bears and am very proud of him and all of them...along with the coaches, the training staff, the S&C staff, the Equipment Mgr and staff, the Alums, the fans, the Orange Mercer T-Shirt-clad waitresses at the Waffle House on Sunday mornings...and everyone else up to and including the President of Mercer and the Trustees. I visit a lot of SoCon / FCS Boards and I have been taken aback a bit by the vitriol spewed at Mercer Fans for being just a little bit proud of what has been accomplished by all of these folks in such a short time. The pride that I have won't change if Mercer gets pummelled in the rest of their SoCon games this year (I don't think they will, but that's another story). I'm not expecting anyone to stand up and salute, but the things I've seen have just been so derogatory, it make me....sad, really. I think, perhaps, the tenor of the typical Appy and GaSou fans may have impacted the fans of other SoCon schools and it is certainly a less collegial tenor than I expected. For full disclosure, I am not a SoCon or football 'newbie.' I played for a SoCon school in the late 70's / early 80's and did a stint as a Grad Asst Coach there as well. I have closely followed SoCon football since, but I guess I didn't notice the change in the way fans 'get after each other.' I still see FU and ElCid gettin' after each other cuz they truly love to hate one another, but it's also easy to see there is SOME measure of respect between the two 'sides' - kind of like brothers that always fight. Anyway - maybe after a 'pledge year,' Mercer Football (and its fans) will get a wee little bit of respect among the SoCon public...or maybe that 'tone' is just the way things are now and are gonna be. Again - thank you for your kind words!!!

I think it is hard to believe that Mercer could come so far so fast that some are just waiting for the air to deflate. After all if Mercer can accomplish a level of success with just one scholarship recruiting class, then what does that say about the teams that have five scholarship recruiting classes on the field? I think what most of the naysayers miss is that this hotbed of Middle Georgia talent was just waiting for a place to land. Mercer was at the right place at the right time and then exploited the opportunity with excellence at every point.
