I think we should drop them again. The bus ride sucks and they don't seem to be able to compete like Citadel. I think if we added JSU and KSU we could make the SoCon great again. Would create in-state rivalries for Mercer and Samford. Yes those two will probably continue to dominate their conference, but perhaps with them included the SoCon could get a #1 seed with an undefeated team and not have to go up to Fargo. My impression of those two (and JSU because they’ve been around a lot longer) is that they need to demonstrate a commitment to FCS football over the long term. I’d be fine with seeing both. I do think that VMI is going to struggle to keep it up at this level. They are bad and just getting worse. They are last in basketball. I believe they were last in baseball last spring as well.

BUMP for Furman Update - Losing Top Expected-to-Return Defensive Player - only a True Freshman in 2017, but led the Paladins in tackles. (Rumor until confirmed by FUBeAR)

Reading between the lines of coachspeak, seems like Hendrix isn't too beat up over it. "Mutually agreeing to part ways" seems to suggest friction with the coaching staff.

Losing the Tsunami bar is probably a net gain.

Losing the Tsunami bar is probably a net gain. 4th down conversions in last year’s Mercer @ Furman game disagree with your premise.

I don’t know why Riley didn’t throw it into the stands. I’m inclined to think that he didn’t expect Stokes to cover that much ground as quickly as he did. Not often you see a NG at full speed in the open field, but that kid can move.

A NG ON AN OPEN FIELD, NED!
Looking at the routes/OL, looks like it was supposed to be a quick throw. I'll chalk it up to inexperience that 1. He did not make the original throw and 2. did not have the situational awareness to know his OL wasn't going to be able to move with him/not going to have time to wait for someone to get open. I expect some of that to improve this year.

The other 3 Retrievers all ran quick stop routes, but their DB’s were playing off. The top WR had press technique, so maybe he’s supposed to run a 9 route in that event & QB didn’t see the press. Hard to say, but definitely should have chunked it somewhere instead of what he did. I’m sure he and Coach Lamb had a quiet conversation about that shortly afterward. BTW - You know who did a great job on that play? John Russ. Doesn’t Mercer need to hire a QB Coach due to Coach (Tre) Lamb’s move to OC at TTU. Isn’t John Russ Coaching College Football in GA?...just sayin’ Also - obscure Game of Thrones memes references are not allowed on this message board.

I expect some of that to improve this year. I 100% agree. Certainly looks like he was looking for something quick to the right side. At least he didn't throw it, though. It would have been an incompletion at best and in all likelihood picked off. Every Bear receiver was blanketed. Just from a pure football perspective, I loved Stokes' play. He gets his hands down, gets off the cut block, moves laterally down the line, and then attacks once he has help. As I watch it again, I'm not really sure what the LT is doing on that play. He doesn't get a piece of either the DE or the NG, and just appears to fire out onto his belly, which I'm sure is probably not what was intended.

Whole OL supposed to throw a cut to clear out throwing lanes. Looks to me like they're cutting whatever is straight ahead or to their right. RB picks up DE/OLB. OL got their hands down, but no one was open. They ran something similar against Auburn, but didn't get their hands down long enough. 2:07:37

On both plays they appear to cutting away from the RB. In both instances he picks up the unblocked man outside the OT and the rest of the OL heads the opposite direction.
Granted, the play against Auburn was better executed, but the WR was probably open because he ran a two yard route on 3rd and 13.
My suggestion is not that the LT against Furman was doing anything wrong. I watch that and think that even if he doesn't get a piece of someone off the snap, he probably should get a piece of them as they run around him. No one effectively cuts Stokes, who then steps around the LT (laying flat on his belly looking like he's a hostage in a bank robbery) to go get the sack.
You guys know more about Mercer's play calling than I do, but under no circumstances should the NG be sacking the QB on a play like that. Of course, if the QB holds the football on a play like that, his fate is in his hands.
