Thought I'd go ahead and get this started...Here is one Memphis Fan's thoughts on the game with Mercer and Memphis' Player losses/returning Players...
------------------------------------------------------------------
First off, the ooc sucks azz. No other way to put it. No one gives a sh*t about playing mercer...
On offense, the tigers lost the qb and top two receivers.
On defense and let's admit that was a struggle last year, we lost the best pass rusher, several good linebackers and two valuable dbs...Tigers might be about the same as last year on defense.
Tigers lost both punters. Freshman punter coming in.
I could see us losing 3-5 games...
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Memphis also had quite a few Coaching changes in the off-season. Here's one Memphis Fan's [too early, as you will see] recap of those changes with my [additions to his commentary]...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Replaced [OC/RB Coach - Darrell (who I sacked multiple times in a game vs. Chapel Hill HS in 1977 - his Dad was Coaching LB's at UNC at the time...and Recruiting me for the Tar Heels...no offer though...maybe he didn't like me sacking his kid ) (Update 2/20/18 - Just learned that Coach Jim Dickey passed away on Saturday 2/17 at 84 - the day after I was thinking about him and posted this. He was a good man - went on the become HC @ Kansas State in '78. RIP Coach Dickey & Condolences to his Family)]. Dickey [who was formerly a HC at North Texas and who left Memphis to go to Texas A&M as OC/QB Coach] with [new Assoc. HC/TE Coach Will] Hall [who comes from U. of Louisiana and prior to that was a successful HC @ West Georgia & West Alabama]. Dickey was like the glue and will be missed. But Hall is well known throughout the southeast and is a younger, recruiter type. Helps fill the Mississippi recruiting void created by [DB Coach Marcus] Woodson's departure [to Auburn as their DB Coach]. Also, allowed us to promote rising star [new OC/QB Coach & former QB/TE Coach Kenny] Dillingham - insuring we keep him. Recruiting impact: loss in TX/OK, gain in MS/AL.
Replaced [ILB & Recruiting Coordinator Dan] Lanning [who joined the UGa staff] with [Dan] Patterson [but Patterson didn't stay at Memphis for long (if he ever got there) as he accepted the DC position at Utah State instead]. Sort of the opposite of the situation above. We lose a young recruiter, but gain a lot more experience. The Tigers now have 4 [make that 3] guys coaching D with Coordinator level experience. Recruiting impact: loss in MS/midwest/juco, gain in OK/TX.
Replaced [DB Coach Marcus] Woodson with [DB Coach TJ] Rushing [who comes to Memphis from the same role at Arizona State]. Recruiter for recruiter. Rushing has less coaching experience but has the NFL pedigree to point towards in recruiting. Recruiting impact: loss in MS, gain in OK/West coast ?
Added [RB Coach Anthony] Jones [who comes to Memphis from a HS HC position in the Memphis area] in a new position. Recruiter. Recruiting impact: gain in TN.
Also, promoted [Asst HC/Running Game Coordinator/OL Coach Ryan] Silverfield, [new OC/QB Coach & former QB/TE Coach Kenny] Dillingham, and [WR Coach] Johnson [who actually left to be WR Coach at Tennessee]. What about Dillingham? The new OC is just 27 years old.
-------------------------------------
So...in an effort to sort all of this mess out...I came up with this...
Lost 4 Coaches to SEC Programs and added 5 (due to FBS Staff's expanding from 9 to 10) from considerably lesser levels of Football than the SEC.
Lost...
Darrell Dickey - OC/RB Coach to Texas A&M
David Johnson - WR Coach to Tennessee
Dan Lanning - ILB Coach/Recruiting Coordinator to UGa
Marcus Woodson - DB Coach to Auburn
Added...
Will Hall - Assoc. HC/TE Coach - from U. of Louisiana (FBS G5 - Sludge Belt)
Anthony Jones - RB Coach from Local HS
Desmond Lindsey - WR Coach from Southern Miss (FBS G5)
TJ Rushing - DB Coach from Arizona State (FBS P5)
Scott Symons - ILB Coach from Incarnate Word (FCS)
Promoted...
Ryan Silverfield - from OL Coach/Run Game Coordinator to Asst HC/Run Game Coordinator/OL Coach
Kenny Dillingham - from QB/TE Coach to OC/QB Coach
That's a lot of change in 1 off-season...hard to say that, on paper, this staff is anywhere near as strong as they were in 2017.
