Austin Cox was picked in the 5th round (pick 152) by Kansas City.
Robert Broom taken by Cleveland in 10th round (pick 313).
I think both are juniors, so they may have some leverage in negotiating a deal. Unless there is something I am missing, it wouldn't shock me to see both return to Mercer. Especially Broom.

Also, Chris Vann (25th - 761) to Washington and Trey Truitt (34th - 1015)
Those guys are both seniors and will likely sign for the minimum bonus of $10k (or thereabout). 4th year college seniors have virtually no leverage.

Broom is an interesting decision. Assuming eligibility, he can return to Mercer for his final season if he wants. Would he improve his draft stock? He's got nothing left to prove at Mercer and has put up good numbers against some good programs (like Florida). The downside is that he is a sidearming relief pitcher, which is not going to change. He is unlikely not going to have a statistically much better season at Mercer as 1.70 and 111 Ks in 74 innings is pretty stellar. Do you go back and try to repeat that for the chance in moving up a round in next year's draft, or do you take the money and run?

Depending on his personal financial situation - He could be the son of the family that invented the Broom & own royalty right to all usage of the term “Broom.” Or, his Dad may push a broom for a living - and how close he is to graduation - he may very well take the deal. 140k + whatever else he gets, is a pretty good 1st year comp for a recent college grad. I think you’re right that he would be hard pressed to have a better year (individually & statistically) than he did this year. If I’m speculatin’, I think he’ll bolt.

It does happen occasionally that a relief prospect will go back for one more year to try and increase his stock. The Braves drafted Josh Fields in 2007 with the 69th pick (UGA's closer). Side note: that was a few picks before Giancarlo Stanton. Ugh. He did not sign, opted for another year with the Dogs and was drafted by the Mariners the next year at the 20th pick. So, he jumped 49 spots as a relief pitcher and probably made some more money and finished out his college degree. You make little money in the minor leagues, and Fields didn't break into the bigs until he was 27 (in 2013). That signing bonus has to last you a few years.

Broom signed for slot value of $136,800. Cox signed for an above-slot bonus.
