Carrying over some Wofford 'stuff' to start this thread cuz, well, cuz I want to...
The Citadel - Play By Play
4th Quarter
1st and 10 at CIT35 Robert Riddle pass incomplete to Marquise Irvin, QB hurry by Noah Dawkins.
@ Wofford Play By Play
1st Quarter
Mercer at 04:03
* 1st and 10 at WOF49 Kaelan Riley sacked for loss of 5 yards to the MER46 (Thad Mangum), fumble by Kaelan Riley recovered by MER Jake Flath at MER46.
* 2nd and 15 at MER46 Tee Mitchell rush for 10 yards to the WOF44 (Jireh Wilson;Brandon Brown).
TOTAL 5 plays , 23 yards Time of Possession: 3:34
Wofford at 00:29
I've copied some plays above because they tell A LOT of the story about what happened in the Wofford game...
Losing Riddle, with the way he was playing and the promise that he had shown hurt, but it hurt worse than many think...Remember Riddle running the ball so effectively against Memphis and Samford? Remember Riley running the ball effectively last year? Remember John Russ having 40 carries @ Samford in 2016? Although the Offense has changed some for 2018, if we look at the 1st 3 or 4 games of the 2018 season, we see the QB run remained part of the Offense. But, with Riddle out, Riley has, obviously, been 'grounded' - No QB rushing attempts - other than sacks/scrambles. So, Riley & Mercer's O has been playing with 1 hand tied behind its back for the past 4 weeks. After Riley was injured in the 1st quarter, he and the O were then playing with 1 hand & 1 leg tied behind its back. Then, on the very next play, Mercer's #1 RB, Tee Mitchell goes out with what I suspect is a separated shoulder (most likely) or a broken collar bone. Yes, Devezin is a hammer and did a great job, but on the play that Mitchell was injured, he showed why he is Mercer's all-time leading rusher - it was a nice counter-play with the H-Back wrapping around and leading. I bet we were going to see quite a bit of that to take advantage of Woffy's aggressive D. You might say, "Well the Offense didn't give up 42 points." But, you would be neglecting how interdependent the 2 units are. I'm sure Mercer's D would have liked to have played better, but trying to stay on the field against their very good Defense with a Zone/Read Offense where the QB Read/Run was even less of a threat than the no threat it had become since Riddle was injured and with a Trigger Man, who has been doing a great job getting the ball to the various weapons in the past 3 weeks, who is trying to set-up, avoid the rush, plant, and throw on 1 leg just was NOT going to happen.
So...THIS WEEK, with Riddle (most likely) still out, Mitchell (most likely) out, and Riley (most likely) out...or at best 'hobbed'...what do the Bears need to do? Cancel the rest of the Season? Well, since Mercer still is in the running for the SoCon Championship and an Autobid to the Playoffs, I don't think that's a smart idea.
FUBeAR is not a Coach...well, certainly not Mercer's Coach...but we all like to have fun 2nd guessing and this situation creates a fun (sorta fun) scenario for some 1st guessing.
So...I'll start with some 2nd guessing
As soon as Riddle went down, I would have started working on a 'healthy' Wildcat package with Mitchell and David Durden having a package of plays from that formation. And the FUBeAR Wildcat, in this case, would not be where the QB shifts. FUBeAR is going to take the QB off the field and have Devezin (or Mitchell, if Durden is the Wildcat) in the backfield with the Wildcat. We've seen Durden can chunk it and I would bet Mitchell is a good enough athlete to at least have a little flood route by the TE or H-Back into the flat that he could have had at least 1 pass play in his package. Zone/Read (both flat 'jet sweep' flow (Houzah) and inside zone flow (Devezin)) would have been featured in that package. May not have been ready to deploy @ VMI, but with the bye week, could have repped it enough to deploy @ Yale, WCU, and @ Wofford, especially after Riley was injured.
How about this week?
Durden Wildcat would be in full effect (paired with Devezin) 25% of the time...or more AND if Riley can't move, Frost needs to be the QB.
ETSU has a very good D with mobile and tall DE's. They lead the SoCon in Sacks. FUBeAR would rather risk facing them with an inexperienced QB than one injured to the point that his mobility is seriously compromised AND is a certainty not a threat to run the ball in this Offense. In the latter case, we KNOW what's going to happen and it's not good. In the former, we don't know. One of the odd times in life where we might prefer to go with the 'devil we don't know' than 'with the devil we do.'
On D - I don't know...play better. Tackle #11 and contain #7 when he scrambles...and all should be fine.
All that 'gurgitated' for fun...I'm sure Mercer's Staff will have a GREAT gameplan & get the win on Homecoming to keep the Bears in thick of this...because our good friends at Samford are going to #BeatWofford and Furman is going to beat Chattanooga...as the Bears need Furman to be ahead of Chatt in one of the 6-2 3-way tiebreakers that are possible.
