Mercer is slightly larger and somewhat more experienced than Furman in almost every category. Looks like Furman’s LB’s & DB’s may be a bit larger than Mercer’s though.

As always, let's take a look at what Mr. Massey has to say about the matter at hand... Variable / Team | Furman | Mercer | Most Likely Score | 30 | 27 | Win Probability | 60% | 40% |
...and here's how Mr. Massey sees the SoCon...including Projecting Wofford to take the Autobid on Fewest Points allowed Tiebreaker with ETSU and Furman, who will ALL 3 be SoCon Champions...

Looking at the table in the post above makes me sad because the games at home vs. The Citadel & ETSU were clearly "winnable" games.
I think about the ridiculous "runner was down" call in the CIT game when their RB clearly fumbled (with Mercer recovering) and it was clearly visible on the replay that he had fumbled...but not overturned...
3rd and 6 at CIT08 Grant Drakeford rush for 15 yards to the CIT23, 1ST DOWN CIT (Malique Fleming;Bradley Earnest).
IMO, that was a 14 point swing as the bellhops treated that Referee's gift like a turnover and went deep the next play for a TD. At that point in the season, if Mercer goes up 24-7 at half...and getting the ball coming out of half...which ended up as a TD drive....so, 31-7....I just don't see them coming back from that...and then Mercer's Starting QB isn't trying desperately to make a play at the end to put up the tying/winning score...and maybe he doesn't get hurt. Of course, their Kickoff Return for a TD was big, but I think the game...and maybe Mercer's season 'turned' on that 1 Fumble; not called, not overturned. That said, if Mercer holds them on 3rd & 6 on their own 23, instead of giving up that 15 yard run...maybe the Bears have that same 31-7 lead in the 3rd quarter anyway.
Then, I think about ETSU...what if that OT hadn't been running after the guy that he just whiffed on PassPro, Mercer has 2 guys there to recover that Sack/Strip in the end zone...and that's 7 points instead of 2? But I think that game turned more on a series than on a single play.
Quarter #4 ETSU 21-18 Mercer Mercer at 06:06 / 1 Timeout 1st and 10 at MER34 Harrison Frost pass complete to Sam Walker for 6 yards to the MER40 (Jared Folks). 2nd and 4 at MER40 Harrison Frost pass incomplete to Stephen Houzah (Blake Bockrath). 3rd and 4 at MER40 Harrison Frost pass incomplete to Marquise Irvin (Jeremy Lewis). 4th and 4 at MER40 Matt Shiel punt 60 yards to the ETSU0, touchback.
No guarantees, but I think if Mercer gets the 1st down there, and the clock running down, it's all 4 downs after that (in hindsight, shoulda been 4 downs here, as Mercer never touched the ball again) and only need about 30 yards to get in range to tie it up.
Whatever was "the turning point" in those games, they were both certainly winnable...and then this week against FU would be about whether Mercer is going to win the SoCon outright or share it with Furman and Wofford (and would get the Autobid, I think, because of the win over Samford), and, possibly, ETSU (which would probably mean Wofford would get the Autobid (on SoCon points allowed), but at 7-4, Mercer would still be in solid contention for a Playoff bid...this year).
Such an, oh so very, short 'distance' from the penthouse to that other house...4 yards & 1 awful call/review, maybe. I guess that what makes all of this so much fun....kinda.

What you think if Bears beat Furman...is there a slite chance of getting in post season Great question. You know, there should be a shot, but there isn’t really. Everyone is ‘assuming’ Furman is in with a win over Mercer. The Paladins would be 6-4 / 5-2 and, potentially SoCon Co-Champs (at worse, tied for 2nd). They also have a ‘good win’ over most-likely-Playoff-bound Wofford and their only ‘bad loss’ would be to Samford. But everyone knows Samford is a capable Team. Mercer would be 6-5/5-3 and 3rd in the SoCon. The Bears would have no ‘good wins’ and ‘bad losses’ to The Citadel & Yale. That’s not really a strong enough resume to knock out some of the many other 6-5 Teams. At 7-4 /5-3, if the Bears had beaten Yale, it would be a “maybe.” Still unlikely though. While we KNOW those wins over Samford (actual) and Furman (hypothetical, at this point) are ‘good wins,’ they would not be viewed as such by the committee, even if Samford beats ETSU. So, the very winnable games against The Citadel & ETSU...and the Also-winnable game against Yale (provided the Bears don’t start the game by digging themselves into a 6 foot deep mudhole...are the daggers. Turn all those around (which really is not much of a ‘turn’) and Mercer, at 9-2 /7-1 with a win over Furman, whose only losses were to an FBS & a ‘forgivable’ one (due to the in-game injuries to key Players) to Wofford is looking at being solo SoCon Champs, getting a Seed, a bye, and a 2nd Round Home Playoff game. Even with a loss to Furman, an 8-3 / 6-2 Mercer is pretty much a Playoff-lock. I’m getting sadder.

Ok, That sums it up!! Thanks Thanks for registering bearsfan - while our host, BearDownMU, is recovering from a serious health issue, I wasn’t sure if new peeps could register here. What thoughts do you have about the game this Saturday with Furman? Do you think a 3rd outstanding performance in a row by Mercer’s D is in the cards? Do you think the O, perhaps with the return of Riley...maybe even Riddle...can find the firepower they displayed in the 2nd half vs. Yale, and vs. VMI & WCU...or maybe even what they showed vs. Samford? How about the returns game? Mercer leads the SoCon & is highly ranked nationally in both Kickoff & Punt returns? Do you see that being a factor or will the very strong of Furman’s Kicker minimize it? Weather is supposed to be great! Will you be bringing a big crowd with you to the game? What does the Tailgate experience at Mercer usually entail for bearsfan & friends/family?

High Stakes Showdown Looms For Furman Saturday At MercerNov 13, 2018 Hunter Reid, Sports Information
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- For the second consecutive season Furman's hard charging football team enters its regular season finale contending for a share of a Southern Conference championship.
A year ago the Paladins needed a win at Samford to claim a share of the league crown but came up short, 26-20, to the Bulldogs in Birmingham. This year the road to put a hand on the SoCon's 2018 Clarence Stasavich Trophy requires two results — a Furman win over Mercer and a Samford road triumph Saturday over ETSU, which at 6-1 has already claimed at least a share of the regular season crown.
A Samford win over ETSU will also ensure Wofford, which has completed league play with a 6-2 slate, gets a share of the crown. Looking to make it a three-way championship parade will be Furman (5-4, 5-2 SoCon), which has shaken off an 0-3 start by winning five of its last six games.
Saturday's results will also determine the SoCon's automatic qualifier and league's at-large invitations to the FCS playoffs, which begin next week.
Kickoff for the ESPN+ live streamed game at Mercer's Five Star Stadium is set for 3:00 p.m.
Arguably the league squad currently with the best head of steam, Furman is coming off a 49-13 demolition of VMI last Saturday that saw the Paladins roll up season highs in points and total offense (590). The offensive showcase featured impressive balance, evidenced in the 288 rushing yards and 302 passing yards.
Sparking the Paladin offense, which featured eight sophomores in its starting lineup versus the Keydets, was fifth-year senior quarterback Harris Roberts, who has proven to be a difference maker when healthy this fall. The Cumming, Ga., product completed 13-of-17 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns in the win over the Keydets, with scoring tosses covering 33 and 69 yards going to sophomore tight end Jake Walker.
Fueling Furman's late season surge is an improving ground game headlined by sophomore tailback Devin Wynn, who rushed for 112 yards and three touchdowns against VMI. Over the last six games Wynn has run for 514 yards and averaged 7.8 yards per carry. His backup, freshman Corey Watkins, has also been productive of late and is coming off a 13-carry, 78-yard, two-touchdown performance against VMI.
While statistically the Paladins don't turn any heads, it's worth noting Furman has by far played the most challenging schedule of any SoCon team in 2018. Scheduled Paladin opponents are a combined 59-38 (.608) this year, and they include FBS No. 2 Clemson along with FCS No. 6 Colgate and No. 12 Elon.
Defensively Furman has lately started to deliver performances that many foresaw from the veteran unit. Three weeks ago the Paladin defense put the fourth quarter clamps on The Citadel in a 28-17 Paladin triumph in Charleston. That was followed by a stellar effort in a 16-10 win over Chattanooga that had the makings of a shutout-type performance only spoiled by a pair of Paladin turnovers. And last Saturday defensive coordinator Chad Staggs' troops left not doubt in throttling VMI, limiting the Keydets high-powered passing game well below its season average.
An experienced front, anchored by senior nose guard Jaylan Reid (39 career starts) and bolstered by productive inside linebackers Elijah McKoy (80 tackles) and Donavan Perryman (69 tackles), will try to make it six wins in the last seven games for the Paladins, who have also gotten stellar play from bandit Adrian Hope, the SoCon sacks leader (12.5) who ranks third nationally and tops among FCS freshmen in takedowns.
Saturday's outcome could be heavily influenced by special teams play, and on that count both teams boast weapons. For Furman, sophomore Grayson Atkins is the best all-purpose specialist in the SoCon. He's made his last 10 field goals, including four from 50+ yards, is averaging 43.2 yards per punt, and has put 25 kickoffs out of the end zone — tops in the league. The ability to deny Mercer the ability to return kicks could be big given the fact the Bears top the league and rank among the best in FCS in kickoff (25.6 avg.) and punt returns (15.6 avg.).
Since Mercer (5-5, 4-3 SoCon) joined the SoCon in football in 2014, the Paladins and Bears have seen their four meetings decided by a total of 22 points, with both programs claiming a pair of wins. Last year Furman won, 28-21, in Greenville in the first battle between Furman's Clay Hendrix and Mercer's Bobby Lamb — two Commerce, Ga., natives, former Paladin teammates, and long-time FU assistant coaches.
So...Hunter Reid is a great guy and does a great job at Furman...but this being a Mercer Fan Board...FUBeAR just can't let a couple of items in this article go without scrutiny... Furman did not PLAY Colgate this year. Colgate was scheduled, but the game was cancelled. Claiming that game as part of Furman's "most challenging schedule of any SoCon team in 2018" and including Colgate's 9-0 record as part of the cumulative wins/losses of the Teams Furman has PLAYED is just a wee bit on the NOT TRUE side. The actual cumulative records of the Teams Furman has PLAYED is 50-38 (.568). Oh, I just noticed that he threw the word "Scheduled" in there...which, TECHNICALLY, makes both statements true. Still... Also, unless I'm terribly mistaken, Coach Lamb was also the HEAD COACH at Furman for 9 years, from 2002 - 2010. As Furman's Head Coach, he won 63% of his games, won a SoCon Championship in 2004, and led the Paladins to the Playoffs in 4 of those seasons, including a "Final Four" FCS finish and an end of season ranking of #3 in the nation in 2005. Only referring to him as a "long-time FU assistant coach" in this article seems rather disingenuous...to FUBeAR.

Let's add North Dakota State to our SOS. We didn't play them, but that doesn't seem to actually matter.
Bobby also drove the spike into the heart of his replacement, which I'm sure was fun for him and judging off the state of the Furman board today they seem most appreciative.
I think the Bears should at least be mentioned in almost a next four out type of situation if they win big on Saturday. Personally, I think we would need Riddle back or Riley at the top of his game to have a shot at winning. Less than 150 yards on offense might be an all time low since we rebooted.

Wishful thinking!! bearsfan, I believe it was Coach Billy Shakespeare who once said, “Brevity is the soul of wit.” He never said it to FUBeAR, obviously. So, FUBeAR, and I’m sure others, do appreciate your clearly witty participation here; just having a difficult time grasping the full meaning of your commentary given your economical use of the language. Feel free to elaborate upon your thoughts a bit more in your posts, if you would like. As far as I know, BearDownMU isn’t charged for the hosting of this site by the volume of words posted. If he is, I’m gonna owe him A LOT of qwan!

Just re-found this forum. I know you have all missed me. I think the Bears will have their chances. Furman has been tough defensively the last few weeks, but are prone to lapses in pass coverage. The Paladins are pretty stout against the run, so I don't think trying to find a lot of space to between the tackles is going to work. Mercer is going to have to try and establish the run, of course, but I think they are going to have to throw it to win. If I am Mercer's offensive staff, I have to scrap whatever that game plan was against UTC. Furman is comparable to the Mocs defensively, but has a much better offense and special teams unit. I do not think 150 total yards is going to cut it. My thought would be to try to play a low scoring field position type of game. Give Frost (if he's the guy) some easier throws by rolling him out of the pocket, work in some screens, and try to get some guys in space. Not necessarily looking to score on every play, but try punting Furman deep and resting on the good Mercer defense to win the game for you. Maybe Mercer can force a turnover or Furman loses a guy in coverage giving the Bears a great opportunity to score. When Furman has been susceptible to turning the ball over deep in their zone, which has been a theme in every game the Paladins have lost. The Citadel deployed a similar tactic against Furman that worked for large parts of the game - get enough offense to punt the Paladins deep and let your defense go out and try to force a turnover. The Citadel just wasn't able to force the turnover. Worst case for Mercer, I think, is that they have to chase the game early and start getting into predictable passing situations. I'm expecting a good game.
