I'm buying it because it happened 😀
Obviously I have no insider info, but I am wondering if the other places wanted him to maybe play somewhere else, or the 2 and 3-deep were a little more stacked, or were talking grayshirt, or...
WCU has both Young and Spencer back at RB, but that kid is the mostly highly-recruited RB we have ever signed.
And he isn't the highest rated guy coming to WCU - that is the DE Harris who signed really late in the day because the FBS schools he must have been counting on didn't come through. And then there were 2 guys rated higher than Harris (Mercer's DL Benton and ETSU's LB Brantley).
What I noticed following the SoCon and some G5 programs (oldest goes to FAU and I live in Orlando where UCF is covered ad nauseum) is that lots of guys who apparently ***could have gone*** somewhere bigger went to G5 and SoCon schools. I say could have, as it seems to me kids sometimes say they have some of those offers that they may not really have (or were not that concrete).
The fact that WCU can dangle playing time, offers the "big fish in a little pond" story that FCS schools have to tell, and the fact that we had 2 rookies who played playoff football in the NFL (Crossen won a Superbowl ring and Newsome got TV time in pre-season and was on the Chargers 53-man roster at the end) has to play in there somewhere.

So...a near-equivalent story (but much more 'compressed' distance-wise) would be a kid living in McCormick, SC with offers from Clemson, South Carolina, and Georgia, choosing Furman (they can sell all the things you just mentioned, including NFL...why I'm using Furman, instead of Mercer). If I took a poll of 10,000 Furman Fans and asked them the % likelihood of that EVER happening (unless the Player was related to a Furman Coach), I can guarantee you their unanimous response would be 0%. But, it seems, all WCU fans believe that this situation just happened. OK...if you say so. BTW - I noticed that 247 is now not showing that he has/had a UNC offer.

On McQueen - maybe so, but be is still considered the top RB signed in the SoCon.
I have already dipped too deep into WCU talk on the Mercer board, so I will wrap it up that it is impressive to me that Mercer and WCU have classes that are considered at the top of the league no matter what polls you look at. Mercer did most of their really good work up-front with early signings, and WCU played the waiting game to try and land guys who ended up not getting what they wanted from bigger schools. Two different approaches, but both nice outcomes that positions the programs well.
We all know recruiting rankings are about as important as pre-season rankings. But always good to start with talented kids if possible.

Two different approaches, but both nice outcomes that positions the programs well. We all know recruiting rankings are about as important as pre-season rankings. But always good to start with talented kids if possible. BTW - was looking for some video on McQueen to compare to Marshall's and came upon this interesting article from the Football writer for the largest newspaper close to his hometown... Sammy Batten: UNC expecting active finish to 2019 class"Scotland’s McQueen has options Running back-linebacker Syheam McQueen of Scotland High is also a prospect UNC is considering, but not as originally reported. McQueen made an official visit to Chapel Hill on January 11 and left with a “conditional″ offer from the Tar Heels. “They will offer contingent on whether they sign a couple of linebackers ahead of him on their board right now,″ Scotland coach Richard Bailey explained. “So, he can either wait and see what happens on signing day with some of their recruits. Or he can go with his other options.″
Those include scholarship offers to play running back at N.C. A&T or Western Carolina. The Tar Heels have recruited McQueen as a linebacker."FUBeAR would be quite surprised if the young man's own HS Head Coach neglected, a week before signing day, to mention his options to go to NC State or South Carolina (while discussing his (non)option at UNC) if he truly had those options available. So, from this FUBeAR must conclude that the young man chose WCU over NC A&T. Nothing wrong with that at all. Either program is a great option and he may just turn out to be the best RB the SoCon has ever seen and go on to a long and decorated career in the NFL. But, as suspected...the fact is that he did not choose WCU (and I'm sure he wouldn't have chosen Mercer or Furman either) over offers from UNC, NC State, and South Carolina. Note1: None of this besmirches Mr. McQueen in any way. I have not seen anything where HE is claiming to have had these 3 P5 ACC/SEC offers when he chose WCU. He appears to be a heckuva good Player. The only besmirching is intended for those ‘claiming’ these offers/options existed for him at the time he chose WCU and for those who choose to believe or pretend to believe those claims without question. Note2: Wonder if this post by the ‘dastardly Catamount-hatin’ villain,’ FUBeAR, will get copied over (in its entirety) to the WCU message board(s) as so many others have been in the past. Kinda doubt it.
