Eight Bears Named to NFF Hampshire Honor Society Mercer places SoCon-best eight players in prestigious honor society
IRVING, Texas – Eight Mercer football student-athletes have been named members of the 2019 National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society, the organization announced Wednesday.
Seniors...
* LeMarkus Bailey
* Bradley Earnest
* Cole Fisher
* Brandon Gurley
* David May
* Tee Mitchell
* Matt Shiel
* Austin Wysor
...were honored as members, joining six Bears who have previously earned the recognition over the last two years. Mercer's eight student-athletes named to the society are the most among Southern Conference schools.
The honor society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who maintained a cumulative 3.2 grade point average or better throughout their college careers. An all-time high of 1,643 players from a record 424 schools qualified for membership in the society's 13th year.
Nominated by their respective schools, members of the NFF Hampshire Honor Society must have:
* Completed their final year of playing eligibility in 2018
* Graduated players, who have remaining eligibility but will not return to collegiate play (e.g. declared for NFL Draft or retired from football), may also be nominated.
* Achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study
* Met all NCAA- or NAIA-mandated progress toward degree requirements
* Been starters or significant contributors throughout the 2018 season
# of Players from each SoCon School named...
Mercer = 8
Western Carolina = 5
The Citadel = 3
Furman = 2
Wofford = 2
Chattanooga = 1
ETSU = 0
Samford = 0
VMI = 0
Mercer had the 8th most number of Players in FCS receive this prestigious honor.
The "Top 10" list was topped by Harvard with 16, then Brown with 13, Drake & Dayton with 12, and also included Princeton & Dartmouth, along with our Mercer Bears. Only 1 'Scholarship' program in FCS exceeded the number of Bears on the list. Interestingly, that 1 school was the current (and multi-year) FCS National Champion, North Dakota State University with 9.
