New dorms at MercerMercer University plans to add a new six-story student residence hall and parking deck near its stadium on Mercer University Drive. Plans for the proposed building include 90 suite rooms totaling 352 beds. The five-level parking deck will have capacity for 408 parking spots... The site where dorms are planned abuts the long-closed part of College Street that cuts through campus. 1501 Mercer University Dr - PLANS

Very nice design. I am glad they went traditional. It will never look dated. Prospective students expect a private school to look a certain way.
No building on Samford's campus is ugly because they stuck with the Colonial Williamson design. They avoided having hideous 70s and 80s buildings.
Unfortunately, the medical building at Mercer is an eyesore. And I am afraid the new science buildings will not stand the test of time. They should have been very modern or traditional, not updated 80s designs.

Dorm has been canceled. Apparently there is some concern that enrollment won't keep increasing. I believe the number of graduating high school students is projected to decrease over the next ten years.

In light of the pandemic and its potential destruction of many private colleges without huge endowments, the decision to not build the new dorm was a very good one. While I think Mercer will survive, many lesser private colleges will not unless the government bails them out. I do think Mercer will struggle going forward with depleted resources and smaller enrollment.
